Baseball Drops Game One of CAA Championship to Delaware

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – No. 5 William & Mary baseball (30-25, 13-14 CAA) fell in the CAA Championship opening game to No. 4 Delaware (31-24, 16-11 CAA), 7-3, Wednesday afternoon.

Mark Hindy made an impressive relief appearance, going 4.0 scoreless innings, fanning six and allowing just a pair of hits, but the Tribe did not have the run support to come all the way back from an early deficit.

The Blue Hens put up five runs in the first inning, and starter Zack Potts and Hindy combined for six shutout innings to follow the early offensive outburst, hoping to keep the Tribe in the game.

Ben Parker tied for seventh in single-season runs scored, coming across with his 66th of the year in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from freshman Anthony Greco to get the Tribe on the board.

Hindy entered the contest following the first Tribe run, striking out the side in his opening frame. He scattered three more strikeouts through his next three innings of work, allowing just a pair of hits. Two Blue Hens reached on a walk and hit by pitch, but the lefty erased every scoring chance for Delaware over four shutout frames.

Josiah Seguin belted a first-pitch single to right field to lead off the sixth inning and, advancing on a Henry Jackson single up the middle and Parker fly out to right, the freshman came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Joe Delossantos

W&W was chipping away at the Delaware lead, heading into the seventh down 5-2. Delaware added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth before sealing its tournament-opening victory allowing just one W&M run in the deciding ninth inning.

The Tribe will fight to stay in the CAA Championship as they play in the first elimination game at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, at Brooks Field in Wilmington. The opponent is still to be determined, as W&M will take on the loser of No. 3 Northeastern vs. No. 6 Hofstra.

W&M faced elimination in its final regular season game on Saturday at Campbell, needing a win to advance to the Championship. The Tribe looks to repeat its fate and press ahead when it counts.
