WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball (29-24, 12-14 CAA) remains on the hunt for the sixth and final spot in the 2024 CAA Championships as it fell to Campbell (31-21, 12-14 CAA), 10-2, Friday night.
Nate Knowles hit an incredible career milestone with his six strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work, eclipsing the century mark. The junior became just the fifth Tribe pitcher in program history and the first since 2011 to record 100 strikeouts, as he brought his tally to 103 on the year.
His 12.69 strikeouts per nine innings currently sit at third-best in W&M history and mark the highest among pitchers who recorded 70 or more innings of work.
Henry Jackson saw to a noisy opening for the Tribe as he battled back from an 0-2 count and sent the sixth pitch of the game into orbit for his fifth home run of the year. His leadoff homer marks the first of its kind since Ryan Hall mashed one in the leadoff spot in February 2016.
With the home run, the outfielder extended his hitting streak to seven games, tying his season high.
Ben Parker and
Joe Delossantos each wore a pitch in the game, the third and fourth of the series for the Tribe, inching closer to the program-record 114 HBPs with a total of 108 on the season.
Continuing to extend a pair of program-record marks, 10 strikeouts from Knowles and
Brendan Kelly bring the staff's total to 524 on the year and five walks drawn increased the tally to 326.
Parker accounted for one of the Tribe's walks, marking his 47
th of the season, tying Ryan Brown's total in 2010 for the second most in a single season in program history.
The bats were quiet following Jackson's home run, collecting freebies but getting only one more hit on the board.
Knowles silenced the Camels offense for the first four innings, three times facing the minimum and once working out of a jam to strand three.
Trouble hit for the Tribe in the fifth inning as the Camels managed to put four unearned runs on the board, their first of the contest. Errors wounded the Tribe, allowing five runs to cross unearned in the contest.
W&M got one back in the sixth frame, cutting the deficit to 4-2 as Delossantos came across on a wild pitch, but that would end the scoring for the Tribe in the contest.
Six more runs scored for the host team in the late innings, taking the game out of reach for the Tribe.
Kelly retired a pair in relief to end the sixth inning and dealt a scoreless eighth, but the Tribe were unable to come up with additional runs.
The Tribe will return to action Saturday, May 18, for its final regular season game of the season as it looks to become the sixth and final team to clinch a championship berth.
