WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – On Friday, William & Mary baseball opened its series at Monmouth with a low-scoring game, which was tied 1-1 heading into the eighth inning. Following suit, only two runs scored in Saturday's contest as the Tribe (21-10, 5-3 CAA) fell to Monmouth (8-16, 4-4 CAA), 2-0, evening the CAA weekend series at one apiece.
In a strong defensive showing, the Tribe turned a pair of inning-ending double plays and senior catcher
Nate Goranson threw out a pair of baserunners to reach a career milestone, tying for seventh in W&M history in runners caught stealing with a career mark of 28.
The Tribe pitching staff produced its 10
th two-or-fewer-run performance of the year as
Zack Potts allowed a pair of Hawks to cross in his 5.0 inning start and sophomore righty
Owen Pierce tossed three shutout innings to close, but the Hawks' trio of arms was the difference-maker in the game.
Pierce made his fourth-straight scoreless appearance and his eighth-total among his 10 outings on the year, allowing just three hits with no walks and notching a strikeout on Saturday.
The Hawks answered the Green & Gold's effort on the mound as Monmouth's Alex Couture tossed seven shutout innings to open game two of the series and a pair of relief arms sealed the shutout, the first of its kind for the Tribe in 2024.
The Tribe scattered base knocks throughout the contest but weren't able to come away with a run.
Ben Parker and
Joe Delossantos sent a pair of singles through the sides in the top of the first, with each of their 41
st hits of the season.
Luca Trigiani belted a two-out single to left field to get a man on in the top of the seventh. In the eighth,
Anthony Greco drew a five-pitch walk and
Ben Parker found his way on base once again as he wore the next pitch to move Greco into scoring position.
Trigiani reached again on a two-out walk in the ninth, but the Hawks managed to strand the Tribe's comeback hopes on base to take the second game of the series.
W&M will return to MU Baseball Stadium at 1 p.m. on Sunday for a rubber match against Monmouth as it fights to remain unbeaten in weekend series, searching for the eighth series victory of the year and the third in conference play.
