Baseball Powers to Third CAA Series-Victory

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – William & Mary baseball (22-10, 6-3 CAA) earned its seventh weekend series win and third CAA series victory in as many weekends as it took down Monmouth (8-17, 4-5 CAA), 9-5, in Sunday's rubber match.

The Tribe had a loud answer for Monmouth's series-tying win on Saturday afternoon, taking an early lead on a three-run home run in the first inning off the bat of freshman Anthony Greco, one of the team's three on the day.

Trey Christman and Nate Goranson accounted for the other two. Christman belted the first of his career and Goranson sent his fourth of the season to dead center.

Carter Lovasz earned his second save of the year to tie John Farrell '13 for second in program history in career saves with 14, trailing only W&M's all-time leader, Joseph Gaouette '16 (18).

The Tribe's offense combined for 10 hits as Greco, Christman and Ben Parker each tallied two on the day. Parker's two-hit game was his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the year as he also claimed the team lead in hits with 43.

Wasting no time, Lucas Carmichael ripped the first pitch of the day up the left line for a leadoff single. Parker followed suit with a single of his own to get an early runner in scoring position for the Tribe.

Greco, who came to the plate with two on and one out in the top of the first, pulled his third long ball of the season to deep right field to score three early.

The momentum had drastically shifted in the Tribe's favor from Saturday's contest as the Green & Gold came out swinging. Continuing to put pressure on the Hawks' starter, Christman sent a solo shot to left field for the first home run of his collegiate career in the second inning.

Alex Markus, who put up a solid start for the Tribe, finished his 3.0 innings of work with no earned runs allowed, while giving up two hits. The lone Hawks run that crossed in the second inning was aided by a Tribe defensive miscue. The graduate student closed his day with a 1-2-3 third inning, to hold the Tribe's 4-1 lead.

Reed Interdonato, a transfer out of Monmouth, earned his second win of the season against his former team. He allowed just two hits and one run over his 3.0 innings of work, while fanning four Hawks.

In the top of the sixth, W&M tacked on two insurance runs. Christman notched his second hit of the day with two on, lacing one up the middle to score Henry Jackson from second base. Carmichael drove in the second run, scoring Goranson on an RBI groundout, giving the Tribe a 6-2 lead.

Joe Delossantos extended his hitting streak to eight games with a base knock through the left side in the top of the seventh inning. The single also extended his on-base streak to 31 games, reaching safely in every appearance on the year.

In the final three frames, both teams added three more runs. Two of the Hawks' crossing in the seventh following a Tribe error.

In the eighth inning, Goranson added the Tribe's third and final home run of the day, taking the 2-1 pitch to dead centerfield, marking the 11th of his career.

The bases loaded in the top of the ninth as Delossantos walked, Greco singled up the middle and Jackson walked. Driving in a run for the Tribe, Luca Trigiani reached on a fielder's choice and advanced Greco to third. Trigiani stole second, marking the Tribe's third swiped bag of the inning as Delossantos and Greco perfectly executed the double steal earlier in the frame.

The final Green & Gold run of the game scored on a Hawks wild pitch, as Greco crossed the plate for his second run of the day.

A pair of hits allowed one more Monmouth run to score, but Lovasz limited the damage to one as he shut down the comeback hopes of the Hawks for his second save.

The Tribe improved to 6-3 in conference play, matching Charleston with the second-best league record through the first three weekends. Sitting at third in the standings, the Tribe trail just Northeastern and UNCW, who both own a 7-2 record through nine CAA games.
