Baseball Falls in One-Run Game at Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – William & Mary baseball (25-13, 8-5 CAA) fell in its second-straight one-run contest, dropping the series opener at Charleston (26-10, 10-3 CAA) Friday, 6-7.

The Tribe will look to repeat the story of last weekend, in which they fell in the first series opener since opening night and bounced back with a pair of wins to take the CAA weekend series over NC A&T.

W&M, held to just a pair of runs through the first six innings, made a huge comeback effort in the seventh frame as they scratched across four runs on three hits to take the lead. The Cougars had a two-run answer to tie the game, 6-6, in the seventh inning.

The teams combined for six errors on the day, the final of which allowed the go-ahead run to cross for the Cougars in the eighth.

Lucas Carmichael and Henry Jackson each extended their hitting streaks to seven games. Carmichael had a pair of hits, tallying two for the seventh time this season and reached base to lead off the game for the fourth time in his last five games.

Ben Parker, who also had a pair of hits posted his team-leading 17th multi-hit game of the year, also knocking in a run and scoring one of his own.

The Tribe got the game started, racking up three hits and a pair of runs in the first inning as Carmichael's leadoff single allowed Joe Delossantos to drive him in for the contest's first run and Delossantos' 38th RBI of the year.

Advancing to second on an error and third on a wild pitch, Delossantos came around to score on a bunt single by Jackson.

Nate Knowles dealt a 1-2-3 first frame to start his outing, but the Cougars overtook the Tribe's two run lead with three runs over the next three innings. The junior struck out six over his 4.0 innings of work.

The Cougars would score one more in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-2 lead over the visitors, before the Tribe answered.

In the seventh, W&M put up a four-run effort, coming all the way back from the 5-2 deficit for the lead. Forcing a pair of Cougar pitching changes in the frame before an out was recorded, the Tribe batted around the lineup.

Freshman shortstop Kevin Francella led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Carmichael's second hit of the day. Parker laced a single through the left side to score Francella.

Scoring two more on the next two at-bats, Delossantos ripped one to the Cougars' shortstop to draw an error and Christian Rush belted a go-ahead RBI double to left field. Luca Trigiani hit his team-leading sixth sacrifice fly of the season for the Tribe's 6-4 lead.

With a pair of runs in the seventh and another in the bottom of the eighth, the host team was able to break the tie ballgame. Cougars closer Davis Aiken grabbed his seventh save of the year, holding off the Tribe's final comeback hopes in the ninth.

The Tribe will return to Patriots Point Saturday at 2 p.m. as they look to even the series with Charleston.
