Baseball Drops First Series Opener Since Opening Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball (23-11, 6-4 CAA) fell in a series opener for the first time since opening night, breaking a six-week streak of series-opening victories. North Carolina A&T (19-14, 4-6 ACC) took the Friday night game by a score of 8-4 to earn a win in the teams' first-ever matchup at Plumeri Park.

Henry Jackson's pair of RBI and hits led the Tribe, while freshman duo Trey Christman and Josiah Seguin also drove in runs.

Lucas Carmichael reached base four times in the contest, twice drawing walks, knocking down a double and wearing a pitch. Nate Goranson also found his way on base with a pair of walks and a HBP.

Four times the Tribe reached on extra-base hits as Jackson, Seguin and Luca Trigiani joined Carmichael with doubles.

The Aggies got the jump early, scoring a pair in the opening frame. Despite two hits and a walk, the Tribe didn't have an answer in the bottom of the inning.

Alex Markus made quick work of the second inning, retiring three Aggies in order, but one more run was able to scratch across in the third frame.

The Tribe answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, cutting the lead to just one, but weren't able to pull ahead in the contest. Markus was credited with the loss in his 11th start in the Green & Gold.

Adding four runs in the fifth, NC A&T took a five-run lead over the Tribe, making it a 7-2 ballgame.

After a scoreless frame by Reed Interdonato in the sixth, the Tribe nearly put together a rally.

Goranson was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Trigiani double to left. Christman drove in the senior on an RBI groundout and Seguin followed with an RBI of his own on a double to center. A pair were stranded as the Tribe didn't scratch another run across after an Aggies pitching change.

The final run of the night scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh, bringing the final score to 8-4.

Nick Lottchea tossed the final 2.1 innings, striking out a pair and working a 1-2-3 eighth inning before allowing a pair of hits in the final frame. Picking off the leadoff man on first, Lottchea tied Tim Park for 12th in career pickoffs in W&M history, earning his fifth.

W&M will look to even the series in game two at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at Plumeri Park.
