Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader to Open Weekend Series

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball returned to the win column in a dominant fashion Friday against Fordham, tossing a combined shutout in the afternoon game of a doubleheader and scoring 10 runs in the night cap.

Nathan Goranson led the offensive charge for the Tribe in the first contest, belting his first two-home run game, and Joe Delossantos offered a homer and 4 RBI of his own in the second game.

With the Tribe's 10th win of the season, the team improves to a 10-4 record, while the Rams fall to 2-11.

Game One
The Tribe took the first game with a score of 5-0, marking the second shutout of the year for Head Coach Mike McRae's pitching staff.

Nate Knowles, Mark Hindy and Carter Lovasz combined to shut out the Rams in the series opener, posting three impressive final lines.

Knowles made his fifth start of the season, tossing 3.0 innings of one-hit ball. Fanning five for the fourth-consecutive game, Knowles brings his strikeout total to an impressive 28 in just 16.0 innings of work.

Hindy tossed a pair of perfect frames to close his outing, allowing only three hits and no walks over his season-long 4.0 innings of work while striking out four Rams to earn his third win on the year.

Goranson cracked open the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring the first run of the series. In his next at-bat in the sixth, the catcher smashed his second homer for a pair of RBI, scoring Lucas Carmichael following a singled up the middle.

Leading off the seventh inning, freshman Anthony Greco roped a first-pitch single to right field. Ben Parker ripped a double down the left field line and Henry Jackson, pinch running for Greco, rounded the bases to score from first.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh frame, Luca Trigiani was hit by his second pitch of the day, this time for an RBI, to bring in the Tribe's fifth and final run of the afternoon.

Lovasz matches his season-high four strikeouts for the fourth-straight outing, holding the Rams to zero with only a pair of hits and no walks allowed. He capped his night with two punchouts in the ninth inning to seal the game for the Tribe.

Knowles and Lovasz have appeared in both of the Tribe's shutouts on the year.

Game Two
Taking the second game of the doubleheader 10-6, the Tribe got off to a slower start in the night cap. The Rams scored three over the first three frames before the Green & Gold had an answer, but the offense came back to combine for double-digit runs once again.

Trailing 3-0 as they came to the plate in the bottom of the third, Parker singled to lead off the frame. A few defensive miscues by the Rams landed Parker on third base and Delossantos on first.

The first run came across as Parker advanced on a wild pitch, and Greco knocked in the remaining Tribe runner on base with a sacrifice fly, cutting the Fordham lead to one run, 3-2.

The bases loaded up in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Corey Adams was hit by a pitch and Josiah Seguin and Parker drew walks. Two outs and a 2-2 count couldn't phase Delossantos as he launched a go-ahead two-bagger to left field to clear the bases. The Tribe took their first lead of the contest, 5-3.

Answering with three runs over the next two frames, the Ramps shifted the advantage back in their favor.

Heading back to the plate in the seventh inning, the Tribe began a 5-0 scoring run to reach double-digit runs for the sixth time this season.

Delossantos sent the Green & Gold's third long ball of the day over the left field wall to lead off the seventh.

The next pair run crossed on a wild pitch after Witt Scafidi reached on a Rams error. Following a pitching change, the Tribe added another run on a fielding error by Fordham's third baseman as Jackson scored.

Delossantos added his third run of the day as Jackson drove him in, and Trey Christman's second hit of the game added the final run of the Tribe's evening.

Zack Potts earned his second win of the season with his stellar 3.1 innings of work to finish the efforts on the mound for the Green & Gold. He allowed only a pair of hits and one walk, posting his fourth consecutive outing without an earned run. His ERA dips to an impressive 1.50 on the year.
