WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball dropped the first of two midweek matchups against Old Dominion in a 2-6 ballgame on the road Tuesday evening.
After getting off to a hot start in which the Tribe worked their way up to an 8-1 record and earned eight-straight victories, the Green & Gold have fallen in their three most recent contests.
W&M dropped to an overall record of 8-4, which matches the Monarchs' 8-4 record through twelve games.
Lucas Carmichael went a perfect 2-2 while driving in both of the Tribe's runs on the day. His two-hit day was also joined by a pair from freshman infielder
Kevin Francella.
Alex Markus got the nod for the Tribe, going three up, three down in the first inning to start. Over his outing, Markus allowed only one earned run and three hits during his 3.0 innings of work, while fanning four Monarchs.
The Monarchs got ahead early in the game on a second-inning home run.
Scoring three more in the bottom of the fourth, ODU worked up a 5-0 lead through four.
Adding their final run of the game in the sixth inning, the Monarchs took a convincing 6-0 lead.
Breaking the shutout that the Monarchs' pitching staff had been working, the Tribe nearly put together a late rally in the eighth inning, but ultimately fell short of ODU.
Ben Parker was hit by the first pitch of the eighth inning and
Joe Delossantos followed with a single through the left side. Following a double steal, the pair were in scoring position for a single up the middle by Carmichael.
The Monarchs kept the Tribe at bay in the ninth to hold onto their 6-2 lead and take the first game of the midweek series.
Averaging nearly 8.5 runs per game entering Tuesday's contest, the Tribe have only been held to two runs in one other game this season - an opening night 2-4 loss which directly preceded an eight-game win streak.
