WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball (17-7, 2-1 CAA) clinched the conference-opening series with a pair of wins on Friday, but Stony Brook (10-12, 1-2 CAA) dodged the weekend sweep Sunday, taking the final of the three games by a score of 12-3.
Despite the offensive onslaught which headlined the week heading into conference play and following the stellar performance on the mound which was the backbone in the Tribe's pair of wins to open CAA action, the Green & Gold struggled to stretch their dominant week into the series finale against the Seawolves.
Taking after the 2004 W&M team that posted both an eight-game and seven-game win streak in a single season, the Tribe accomplished this feat for only the second time in program history with their second win Friday. As their streak ended at seven games Sunday, the 2024 Tribe matched this mark exactly.
Joe Delossantos and
Luca Trigiani accounted for four of the Tribe's seven hits in the contest, each notching a pair, and extending their reached base streaks in the process. Delossantos leads the Tribe, getting himself on base in all 24 of the contests this season, while Trigiani has now safely reached base in 11-straight games.
With Stony Brook able to crowd the bases for much of the game, the Tribe pitching staff recorded some big outs to work out of jams, combining to strand 15 Seawolves on base.
Capitalizing on defensive mishaps and free bases in Sunday's contest, Stony Brook scratched across runs in seven innings.
The Seawolves opened the contest with a pair of two-run innings, before the Tribe responded in the bottom of the second with two runs of their own.
A Trigiani triple scored the first run of the game for the Tribe as
Nate Goranson was able to round the bases after getting on with a leadoff walk. An RBI groundout from
Kevin Francella drove in Trigiani to cut the Seawolves' lead in half, 4-2, through two.
Stony Brook tacked on three more runs in the next two frames before the Tribe offered another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Josiah Seguin, who was named CAA Rookie of the Week Monday, belted a double down the right line to reach base for the eighth consecutive game.
Ben Parker added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right to score Seguin for the Tribe's final run of the contest. Heading into the sixth inning, W&M trailed 7-3.
Four scoreless frames by a pair of Seawolves sealed the contest as the Stony Brook offense added five more runs in the final four innings for the 12-3 final.
