Tribe Returns to Win Column, Downs VCU on the Road

RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary baseball (18-7, 2-1 CAA) bounced back to the win column with a 6-3 road victory over VCU (16-9, 0-0 Atlantic 10) Tuesday evening.

As the Tribe improved to 18-7 record on the season, they tied the best record through 25 games in program history. Matching the 2004, 2014 and 2019 Tribe teams, Head Coach Mike McRae's squad achieved the mark for only the fourth time in W&M baseball history.

The pitching staff combined for another strong performance, carrying a one-hit shutout game into the seventh inning before the Rams put together an attempt at a late rally. The Tribe recorded 14 strikeouts while limiting VCU to four hits and two earned runs in the contest.

Nate Knowles improved to 3-0 on the season, posting his second consecutive one-hit start and the seventh outing in which he did not allow an earned run over his nine appearances.

The Tribe's home run leaders, Joe Delossantos and Ben Parker each tacked on another to their season totals, Parker's came as one of his three hits. Kevin Francella also added a pair of hits, and reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Josiah Seguin drove in two runs for his third multi-RBI game.

The Rams' lone hit across the opening seven innings came in the first frame as VCU's third baseman sent a single up the middle. Working out of a jam, Knowles stranded three on base to hold the scoreless game.

Luca Trigiani fought off an 0-2 count, drawing a walk to get on base in the second. Francella followed with his first hit of the day and a wild pitch moved the pair into scoring position. Seguin roped a two-RBI single into center field to drive in the first two runs of the game.

Following the first inning, the staff retired the next 15 Rams. A leadoff baserunner reached in the bottom of the third but was erased, as an attempt to steal was quashed by Witt Scafidi behind the dish.

Travis Garnett entered in the bottom of the fourth inning following a leadoff strikeout by Knowles. Adding a pair of his own, catching the first Ram looking and getting the second to chase, the pair combined to strike out the side.

Delossantos turned a 1-2 pitch into a towering solo shot to left field to tally another run for the Tribe, marking his sixth home run of the year.
Mark Hindy entered the game in bottom half of the fifth, going six up, six down to start his outing and carry the Tribe's scoreless bid into the seventh.
A pair of free bases led off the Tribe's half of the seventh inning, as Seguin was hit by a pitch and Lucas Carmichael drew a walk. Parker's eighth home run of the year cleared both the left-centerfield wall and the bases to double the Green & Gold lead, 6-0.
With two more hits in the seventh, the Rams scratched across their first run of the contest on a no-out double play ball to break the shutout.

Continuing the attempt at a late rally, VCU added two runs after drawing a walk and adding a single. As one run came around to score, a Tribe error allowed another to cross for the final run of the contest.

Carter Lovasz finished the game for the Tribe, sealing the victory. Following the eighth inning, Lovasz bounced back to strike out the side in the ninth. His four strikeouts on the day brought his season total to 30 over 21.0 innings of work.
