Women's Tennis Dominant in 7-0 CAA Win over Hofstra

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis continued its CAA dominance with a 7-0 sweep of Hofstra on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Tribe extended its win streak to five matches and has now won 18 consecutive contests against league opponents.
 
The Tribe (9-5, 3-0 CAA) swept doubles to open the match and then won all six singles matches in straight sets. Graduate students Yu Chen (No. 2) and Mila Mejic (No. 3), juniors Hedda Gurholt (No. 1), Ine Stange (No. 4), Alessandra Anghel (No. 5), and sophomore Yaelle Vaissaud (No. 6) picked up singles wins over Hofstra (5-8, 1-3 CAA).
 
How It Happened
- W&M's top two doubles teams remained undefeated in CAA play to clich the initial point of the match. Chen and junior Emma Fernald won their fourth in a row, downing Abigail Higgins and Daniela Rodriguez, 6-4, at No. 1. Gurholt and Stange topped Deniz Soyer and Sabira Mohamed, 7-5, on line two. Chen and Fernald improved to 8-3 at No. 1 and 2-0 in league play, while Stange and Gurholt moved to 7-4 at No. 2 and 3-0 in the CAA.
- Freshman Francesca Davis and Vaissaud made it a clean sweep in doubles, upending Lea Forste-Dinell and Ava Veneziano, 7-5, on line three. The Tribe tandem improved to 8-3 on the year.
- Stange and Anghel quickly pushed the lead to 3-0, dropping just two games each in a 6-1, 6-1 wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Stange won her fifth in a row, improving to 12-6 on the year and 3-0 in CAA play. Anghel won her sixth in a row, upping her ledger to 10-3.
- Mejic cemented the Tribe victory with a straight-sets win at No. 3. After winning a tight opening set, 6-4, the W&M graduate student won an unblemished second, 6-0, over Deniz Soyer. Mejic won her fourth in a row, 10th overall and improved to 3-0 in CAA play.
- Gurholt also remained undefeated at 3-0 in league action. She downed Lea Forste-Dinell, 6-4, 6-2, to improve to 19-4 overall and 10-2 in dual-match action.
- Chen dropped just four total games in a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Daniela Rodriguez. She moved to 13-8 overall and 7-2 at No. 2.
- Vaissaud rounded out the Tribe sweep with a straight-sets wins over Sabira Mohamed on line six. She improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 at No. 6.
 
Up Next
The Tribe continues its homestand when it hosts Temple on Sunday at 11 a.m. The match will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
