FARMVILLE, Va. – William & Mary baseball captured its second run-rule victory of the year, posting a season-high 20 runs and five home runs to overtake Longwood by a score of 20-6 in seven innings.
With the offense combining for 19 RBI, 15 hits and 14 walks, the Tribe also posted season highs in all three statistics..
Christian Rush and
Josiah Seguin each had breakout games, capturing their first hits of the year, but not stopping there. Rush tallied three hits, including a grand slam and a solo home run. Seguin also had a three-hit game, with his first career homer and a trio of runs.
Also exploding for a pair of homers,
Jerry Barnes III had his first career two-home run game.
Ben Parker, who has an on-base streak of 17 through all of the Tribe's games, reached base safely in every plate appearance, going 1-1, with 3 walks and a hit by pitch.
A pair of Tribe freshman made their debuts as
Anthony Marano thew an inning and
Trey Begasse drew a walk in his first plate appearance.
Nick Lottchea earned his second win of the season following three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. For his third-straight outing, the junior didn't give up a walk and he allowed only three hits.
Brendan Kelly also made a scoreless appearance, throwing the final frame. He allowed only one hit and notched a strikeout.
For the second game in a row, the Tribe opened the game with a first-inning home run. Parker drew a full-count walk and Barnes sent a towering home run to left field to put the Green & Gold up a pair.
The Lancers tied up the game in the bottom of the inning getting a pair across on two hits.
Coming in hot for the first of two six-run innings, the Tribe broke open the game in the second inning.
Luca Trigiani led off the frame with a first-pitch single to right field.
Lucas Carmichael and
Ben Parker drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for
Joe Delossantos. Extending his on-base streak to 17 games, Delossantos hit an RBI single to score Trigiani and keep the bases loaded.
Rush's first home run of the day was to the tune of a grand slam, as he belted the first of his career to score Parker, Delossantos and Barnes and complete the Tribe's six-run second inning.
The Lancers added three runs in the bottom of the third, the last time they would score in the contest, cutting the Tribe lead to 8-6.
The Green & Gold came out swinging in the fifth inning, scoring six runs in a single frame for the second time.
Corey Adams walked to lead off the inning and Seguin laced a single to right field for the first hit of his career.
Carmichael and Parker once again took back-to-back bases on balls, the latter for an RBI, before a Delossantos sacrifice fly scored Seguin.
Barnes arrived to the plate ready to do damage, blasting his second home run of the game to opposite field. With back-to-back jacks, Rush sent a no-doubter to left field to add his second home run of the afternoon.
The Tribe tacked on five more runs in the sixth inning, beginning the frame with a Seguin single for his second hit of the game. Five walks, broken up only by a Parker RBI single, added three of the Tribe's runs. Graduate student
Derek Holmes drove in the final of the five, batting in Barnes on a groundout to notch his second RBI of the year.
One final run scored in the seventh inning as Seguin put the cherry on the top of an impressive performance with his first career homer. Ahead 1-0 in the count, the freshman barreled the Tribe's fifth of the day to right center, capping his three-hit day and adding the 20
th run for W&M.
Kelly shut the door on the Lancers with a scoreless final inning, securing the run-rule victory for the Green & Gold.
