WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball scored double-digit runs in the second straight game to earn a 13-7 victory over Quinnipiac in the series opener.
The Green & Gold improved to an overall record of 12-6 on the season, while the Bobcats drop to 5-9.
Alex Markus made another solid start for the Tribe, opening the game with a perfect inning. He followed with two more scoreless frames before his lone run of the contest crossed in the fourth. Ending his day with 3.1 innings of work, the righty tallied four strikeouts and allowed four hits.
With 11 hits and only three strikeouts, the Tribe hit .344 on the day led by
Ben Parker and
Kevin Francella, who each had three-hit efforts.
Parker safely reached base four times on three hits and a walk, continuing his on-base streak to include all 18 games this season and extending his hitting streak to a team-leading 12 games. In three of his times on base, he came around to score.
Francella belted a career-high two doubles – only the second player to do so this year – and tallied three RBI in the contest, tied with
Luca Trigiani for the lead in the game.
Shortstop
Josiah Seguin had his second multi-hit performance in as many games, after showing out at Longwood. The freshman followed his first career home run from Tuesday with a towering homer to right-center field, going yard in back-to-back games.
A pair of Tribe runs came across in the first inning as a wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Parker to cross for his first run of the day. Trigiani drew a full-count walk with the bases loaded to score
Jerry Barnes III.
Snapping for a seven-run second inning, Seguin led the Tribe off with his solo blast. Carmichael singled up the middle and Parker laced a double to left field to put the pair in scoring position. Barnes wore his second pitch of the game, which was the first of three consecutive HBPs, as
Christian Rush and
Nate Goranson each tallied RBI on the latter.
Trigiani recorded his second RBI in as many innings on a sacrifice fly and Francella roped a bases-clearing double to center field. He came around to score on a Bobcat error for a 9-0 lead.
In the third-straight scoring inning, the Tribe added one more on a Barnes sac fly for double digits.
Luke Calveric took over on the mound in the top of the fourth with one out and bases loaded. Retiring the next two batters, one run scored on an RBI groundout and Calveric delivered a massive strikeout to strand two Bobcats.
The sophomore tossed a season high 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out a pair. He earned his first win in the Green & Gold.
The Tribe tacked on their final three runs in the seventh inning, bringing the score to 13-2, as an error scored
Joe Delossantos, who was on base from his second hit of the day.
Another Trigiani sacrifice scored pinch runner
Henry Jackson and Francella's second double brought in
Nate Goranson for the final run.
Not going down without a fight, the Bobcats scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Redeeming his performance in the ninth,
Noah Hertzler worked a perfect final frame with a pair of punchouts to end the game at 13-7.
