Tribe Opens Central Virginia Classic with Eighth-Straight Win

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For only the 13th time in over 125 years of program history, William & Mary baseball has posted a single-season win streak of eight games, a feat which Head Coach Mike McRae has led his squad to accomplish in now-all three of his seasons at the helm of the Tribe.

The Tribe came out on top in the opening game of the Central Virginia Classic, 8-3 over Central Connecticut State, as the offense combined for a season-high 14 hits and the pitching staff allowed only a pair of earned runs en route to an 8-1 overall record. The Blue Devils fell to 0-1 after their first game.

The Tribe is approaching historical territory as they continue to match the best program start since 2019, dropping only the first game of the season.

Owen Pierce has been outstanding for W&M to open his sophomore campaign and today's performance was no exception. He allowed no runs for his third-straight appearance and maintains his 0.00 ERA, tossing 4 strikeouts and allowing only a pair of hits in his 3.0 innings of work to earn his second save of the year.

Joe Delossantos and Jerry Barnes III each had three hits in the Tribe's contest, Barnes hitting the mark for the first time in his career, while Nate Goranson, Anthony Greco and Luca Trigiani each had two RBI in the contest.
After a quiet first inning by both teams, Alex Markus threw a perfect second inning with a pair of strikeouts to bring up the W&M bats.

Greco drew a walk to lead off the second inning and scored the first run of the game on a single from Trigiani.

In the top of four, the Blue Devils got three across to take their first lead of the game, but the Tribe had an answer, returning with seven runs over the next two innings.

Brendan Kelly entered the game in relief in the top of the fifth, going 2.0 innings of work without giving up a run and allowing only a pair of baserunners. The graduate student earns his first win in the Green & Gold in just his third appearance.

Leading off the fifth inning, Barnes, Ben Parker and Delossantos each singled to load the bases. Nate Goranson and Anthony Greco drew back-to-back walks to score a pair. Graduate student Henry Jackson roped a go-ahead single to center field to score the remaining products of the inning's first three hits.

Once again opening the inning with a hit, Barnes tied the knot on his three-hit day. Delossantos barreled a first pitch to left field and Goranson sent a double off the center-field wall to drive in Barnes.
Greco hit his second sacrifice fly of the year to allow Delossantos to score for the second inning in a row.

Freshman Trey Christman wanted in on the late RBI action, scoring Goranson with his second hit of the evening.

Jackson added the Tribe's 14th hit of the contest, topping their 13 hits from the previous two games against Norfolk State and UMass Lowell.

W&M closes out its seven-game homestand with two more opponents in the final days of the weekend, as it hosts Boston College and Sacred Heart as a part of the Central Virginia Classic on Saturday-Sunday, March 2-3.
