WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball walked off their fifth-straight win and second-consecutive weekend series victory in extra innings against UMass Lowell on Saturday evening. The Tribe advanced to a 5-1 record, matching the best start through six games since 2019, and the River Hawks fell to 3-3.
Freshman infielder
Kevin Francella laid down a bunt in the top of the 10
th inning, reaching first on an errant throw, as
Trey Christman rounded the bases to score from first. Christman reached base three times in the contest, scoring each time and accounting for three of the Tribe's five runs.
Reed Interdonato earned his first win in the Green & Gold as he went 4.0 innings, taking the Tribe through the 10
th without allowing an earned run. The junior fanned a career-high seven hitters in his outing and held the River Hawks to only three hits.
Joe Delossantos extended his hitting streak to six games, and posted his fifth multi-hit game in the Tribe's six contests. His season total of 13 hits paces the Tribe and sits at second in the CAA with a top-five batting average (.542) in the conference.
Brendan Kelly made his first start for the Tribe in his second outing, allowing only one earned run and three hits over his 3.0 innings of work. The graduate transfer struck out a pair to open the game for W&M.
Held scoreless until the fourth inning, the Tribe came up to bat with a three-run deficit and chipped away at the River Hawks lead. Christman and Scafidi each worked back from 0-2 counts to draw a pair of walks.
Luca Trigiani roped an RBI single to right-center field to get the Tribe on the board, scoring Christman.
Corey Adams drew a walk to load the bases and the
Witt Scafidi crossed the plate on a balk to make it a one-run game.
Nick Lottchea allowed only two hits in his 3.0 innings of work, giving up one earned run and striking out a pair. Rolling a double play in the fifth to retire the side and allowing only one baserunner in his final frame, Lottchea made quick work of two scoreless innings.
The River Hawks only scored a pair of runs over 10.0 innings from Kelly, Lottchea and Interdonato, dropping the Tribe's team ERA to an impressive 3.60 through their sixth contest.
The Tribe broke through to take its first lead of the contest in the eighth inning, as
Anthony Greco drew a four-pitch walk to get on base first for the Tribe. Christman reached on a fielder's choice and
Henry Jackson wore a pitch to load the bases for the Green & Gold.
Adams ripped a 1-0 pitch to left center to score two, as pinch runner
Christian Rush recorded his third run of the season and Christman tallied his second of the day.
The River Hawks got one back in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 and the Tribe didn't have an answer in the bottom of the frame, sending the game to extras.
The answer came in the bottom of the 10
th for W&M as Francella followed fellow freshman infielder Christman's base on balls. Walking the game off in an unlikely fashion, an errant throw by UMass Lowell's pitcher allowed Christman to score from first base for the victory. The Tribe's first extra-inning victory of the year clinches its second weekend series at home.
