WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball excelled in every phase of the game Sunday afternoon, as the pitching staff combined for a shutout and the offense posted double-digit runs for the second time in the series against UMass Lowell.
The Tribe swept the weekend against the River Hawks with the 10-0 win in its sixth-straight victory. W&M improved to 6-1 on the season, marking its best seven-game start since 2019, and UML fell to 3-4.
After holding opponents to only one run in two games prior to Sunday's contest,
Nate Knowles,
Carter Lovasz,
Luke Calveric,
Hank Lippman and
Owen Pierce combined for the Tribe's first shutout of the season. In a remarkable relief effort, Lovasz, Calveric, Lippman and Pierce allowed no hits and combined for nine strikeouts over 5.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The offense combined for a season-high 13 hits in the fourth game with a double-digit hit total. A pair of graduate transfers posted three hits as
Luca Trigiani went a perfect 3-3 with 3 RBI, a walk and a stolen base, while
Henry Jackson had a 3-4 day, crossing the plate three times and notching a pair of stolen bases.
Knowles opened the game for the Green & Gold, maintaining his perfect ERA on the season over his 4.0 innings of work. He tallied five of the Tribe's 14 strikeouts on the day allowing four hits.
The Tribe's offense scored in each of the first three innings to rack up a 7-0 lead.
Lucas Carmichael belted a leadoff double down the right line and
Nate Goranson followed with the Tribe's first RBI of the day, roping a single into right-center field to score Carmichael.
Jackson singled up the middle for his first hit in the Green & Gold and stole second base before reaching third on a single from Trigiani. Carmichael sent a sac fly to left field to score Jackson in W&M's second run in as many innings.
The offense opened the floodgates in the bottom of the third inning, scoring five on four hits.
Joe Delossantos drew a walk and freshman
Anthony Greco was hit by a pitch to reach base before a double steal, which moved the pair into scoring position.
Four back-to-back RBI singles from
Trey Christman, Jackson,
Kevin Francella and Trigiani gave W&M a convincing 6-0 lead.
Trigiani drew an errant throw from the River Hawks backstop, which allowed Francella to cross the plate for the Tribe's fifth and final run of the frame.
Lovasz allowed only a pair of baserunners in his pair of no-hit innings and fanning four River Hawks. On the week, over a pair of appearances out of the bullpen, Lovasz allowed only one hit and one earned run while striking out eight.
Carmichael reached base once again in the bottom of the fifth and scored as outfielder
Ben Parker ripped an RBI double for his fifth extra-base hit on the season.
Scoring twice more in the sixth inning, Greco wore his second pitch of the day, Jackson earned his third hit, and Francella was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Trigiani's third hit of the day also came in the bottom of the sixth as he laced a two-strike single into right field for a pair of RBI, bringing the Tribe's run total to 10.
In the final three innings, Calveric made his Tribe debut on the mound and Lippman followed as the pair each allowed only one baserunner.
Pierce shut the door on the series sweep, rolling a double play to face the minimum in the ninth.
