Four Pitchers Combine for Two-Hitter in 11-1 Tribe Victory

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Travis Garnett tossed a perfect inning in his Tribe debut to close the door on William & Mary baseball's first combined two-hitter since April 2019 in its 11-1 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday night.

As the Tribe offense belted a trio of home runs among its 10 hits to score 11 unanswered runs en route to the win; Alex Markus, Mark Hindy, Zack Potts and Travis Garnett combined to allow only two hits and no earned runs in the victory while striking out a season-high 15.

Coming off a 10-1 win on Tuesday over Richmond, in which the Tribe's pitching staff allowed only three hits and a run, the performances on the mound continue to shine as the team ERA falls to 4.00.

With the win, the Tribe improve to 4-1 on the season, matching the best five-game start since the 2019 campaign, while the River Hawks fall to 3-2.

Joe Delossantos led the offensive charge, going 3-4 with a home run for his fourth multi-hit game in the Tribe's five contests and extending his hit streak to five games.

Ben Parker also recorded multiple hits, adding his second home run of the year and a double to bring his extra-base hit total to four in five games.

Graduate transfer Luca Trigiani recorded his first home run in Green & Gold and became the fourth Tribe hitter on the year to have three or more RBI in a game.

Freshman Trey Christman also recorded a pair of hits and graduate transfer Jakob Cohn went 1-1 with a pair of RBI.

Markus opened the game with 3.1 innings of no-hit ball, allowing only a single baserunner. Despite the River Hawks getting their lone run across early on a pair of Tribe errors, Markus' start set the stage for eight scoreless innings across the quartet.

The Tribe answered quickly in the bottom of the first with the first of 11 unanswered runs as Parker drew a walk, Delossantos ripped a single to center field and Nate Goranson earned a base on balls to load the bases. Freshman Anthony Greco, who went 4-5 with 6 RBI on Tuesday, drove in the Green & Gold's first run of the weekend series.

In the third frame, the Tribe offense posted their first of five multi-run innings. Three walks from Jerry Barnes III, Delossantos and Goranson – interrupted only by a first-pitch double from Parker – added the Tribe's second run of the game. Scoring on a double play, Parker crossed the plate for the Green & Gold.

Hindy entered the game in the fourth frame, going 3.2 scoreless innings in which he allowed only one hit and fanned six – matching his career single-game high from opening weekend. His .045 opponent batting average leads Tribe pitchers with more than 1.0 inning of work. He earns his second victory of the season with the Tribe's series-opening win.

Scoring in each of the final four frames, Parker led off the fifth inning with a towering solo home run and Trigiani drove in Delossantos, who was on base after roping a first-pitch single to left field.

Parker was hit by a pitch in the sixth to get on base ahead of Delossantos. Absolutely demolishing a 2-0 pitch to left-center field, Delossantos hit his third home run in five games.

Christman laced a single through the right side to lead off the seventh inning for the Tribe to set up for Trigiani's two-tun homer.

Witt Scafidi, Josiah Seguin and Trigiani drew walks to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cohn earned his first hit in the Green & Gold as he drove in the final two runs for the Tribe, making the double-digit total.

Potts and Garnett made quick work of their respective frames. Potts entered in the eighth inning, allowing a single, but rolling a double play to end the scoreless inning with three batters faced. Garnett struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning to seal the victory for the Tribe.
