Elon, N.C. – In one of the most tightly-contested matches of the season, the William & Mary volleyball team dominated the fifth set en route to a 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 15-7) win over Elon in CAA action on Saturday afternoon at the Schar Center.
Katherine Arnason had a monster day for the Tribe (9-15, 5-10 CAA), racking up a career-high 17 kills. Three other Tribe players had double-digit kills, including
Audrey Brcka (13),
Nicole Smith (13), and
Maddie Meyers (12).
Amy Schwem added 31 assists while
Bella Easton had 24 helpers.
The victory kept W&M in contention for the CAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
W&M found themselves in an early 9-6 deficit in the first set. A kill by Brcka, set up by a
Lindsay Kahren assist, sparked a 9-3 run that gave the Tribe a three-point lead.
Elon (11-15, 5-10 CAA) led at the 18-17 mark, but the visitor scored eight straight points to close out the opening-set win. Smith had a pair of kills in that stretch and five overall in the set.
The Phoenix started out hot in set two, taking an 8-3 lead early. Trailing 22-16, the Tribe mounted a late comeback with five unanswered points, spearheaded by a kill from Arnason. But Elon netted three points in a row to take the set by a 25-21 final margin.
W&M responded in the third stanza. Arnason had four kills in the frame, including a crucial point late that tied the match at 22-all. A 4-0 Tribe run sealed the deal as W&M won 25-22.
Neither side led by more than three points in the fourth set. The Tribe had match point at 25-24, but three straight kills from Elon gave the home team the win, 27-25.
In the fifth and deciding set, W&M controlled from the get-go. Arnason had back-to-back kills that sparked a 5-1 run, while a pair of attack errors by Elon put W&M ahead 8-2.
Kahren and Easton then teed up Brcka for two kills that extended the advantage to 11-4. A service ace by Schwem and kills from Smith and Arnason put a capper on the match as W&M won 15-13.
NOTABLE
- The 31 assists for Schwem tied a season-high (Oct. 4 at Northeastern).
- Kahren added 21 digs while Meyers had 17.
- The Tribe posted a hitting percentage of .202 compared to Elon's .169.
