WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team was unable to capitalize on a hot start in the first set, falling to Hofstra 3-0 in CAA action on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
The short-handed Tribe (8-15, 4-10 CAA) were paced by
Nicole Smith, who racked up nine kills.
Katherine Arnason added eight kills while
Amy Schwem posted 14 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tribe started on the right foot in the opening set, racing out to a 12-10 lead after scoring four straight points. A 5-1 run later extended the lead to 18-13.
Nicole Smith was a key cog in the rally as she recorded three kills, while Kaitlin Dunnigan had a critical dig to keep the rally alive in the 16-12 point.
However, the Pride (15-8, 11-3) responded with an immediate 7-0 run that gave them the lead for good, as they held on to win the set 25-21.
Both teams exchanged blows in the second set, with neither side gaining more than a two-point advantage at the 12-12 mark. However, Hofstra finished strong by scoring the final seven points of the set for a 2-0 lead.
The Pride continued their momentum in the third set, winning 25-18. A 5-0 run by the visitors broke open what was a one-point match into a 15-8 lead.
