WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team was unable to corral conference-leading Hofstra as they fell to the Pride 3-0 in CAA action on Friday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
The Tribe (8-14, 4-9 CAA) was led in scoring by
Katherine Arnason, who tallied nine kills and added a pair of block assists. She was William & Mary's lone double-digit point scorer with 10.
Audrey Brcka added seven kills while
Lindsay Kahren led the defense with 15 digs, a game-high for either side.
Prior to the match, W&M honored senior setter
Amy Schwem for recording her 2,000th career assist last Saturday against UNCW.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Arnason had five kills in the opening set to lead W&M, while
Amy Schwem chipped in eight assists. Though the Tribe played even in the early going, a 6-1 spurt by the visitors turned a 10-10 tie into a 16-11 advantage.
William & Mary whittled the deficit to as little as one on two separate occasions, but a 3-0 run by Hofstra (14-8, 10-3) allowed them to take control late and win 25-21.
In the second frame, the Tribe raced out to an early 4-2 lead after consecutive kills from Brcka and
Nicole Smith. The junior Smith would later add a service ace as W&M held a lead at 16-14.
From there, Hofstra regained control with four unanswered points, part of an 8-2 run. Two straight kills from Brcka tied the match at 21-all, but the Pride scored three of the final four points to win the set.
Hofstra flexed their muscles in set three. After a Brcka kill even the score at four, the Pride rallied off four straight points and went ahead 13-6 near the midway mark of the stanza. W&M got no closer than six the rest of the way, as Hofstra scored the final nine points of the match.
