BOSTON, Mass.— The William & Mary volleyball team was unable to overcome timely runs from Northeastern, falling in three sets (24-26, 11-25, 19-25) on Sunday in Boston.
After trading the first points of the afternoon, the Tribe embarked on a 5-1 run, featuring kills from
Maddie Meyers and
Nicole Smith to take a 9-5 lead. The W&M advantage eventually expanded to 14-8 after another finish by Meyers.
The Huskies responded with a run of their own, cutting the lead to 14-13 and forcing a
Ryan Adams timeout. Northeastern would jump ahead 18-16, but the Tribe responded with a 4-0 spurt to take a two-point lead. W&M would hang on to the lead until the Huskies tied things at 24. The hosts used the late momentum to take the lead 26-24.
Meyers led the Tribe with six kills in the set while the Huskies used five aces to help them to a 1-0 lead.
Northeastern continued the momentum in set two by quickly getting out to an 8-3 lead. After a timeout the Huskies continued to find gaps to attack, expanding it to a 17-7 advantage. They closed out the set 25-11 to take a two-set lead thanks to a .577 hitting percentage in the frame.
Kills by
Katherine Arnason and Meyers, plus an ace from
Sabrina Malcolm, gave the Tribe a 6-2 lead in the third. The Huskies rebounded to go in front 12-9 and force a W&M timeout.
The Huskies lead grew to 21-12, but a trio of kills from
Devereaux Hoxsie and another ace from Malcolm sparked a 6-0 Tribe run. Ultimately the comeback effort fell short with Northeastern capping off the sweep via a 25-19 third set win.
The Huskies hit .324 for the match compared to .103 for W&M. Meyers led the Tribe with 10 kills on the afternoon.
