Big Performances Lift Volleyball Past Delaware, 3-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team earned an exciting 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18) victory against Delaware at Kaplan Arena on Saturday afternoon.  
 
Lindsay Kahren led the Tribe (6-10, 2-5) with a career-high 32 digs, which ranks as the fifth most in a four-set match in W&M history, while Nicole Smith posted a career-high 20 kills on a .333 hitting percentage.
 
Amy Schwem (21 assists / 10 digs) and Bella Easton (19 assists / 10 digs) also came up big with double-doubles, while Maddie Meyers (10 kills / nine digs) nearly accomplished the feat.
 
Although W&M jumped out to an 8-3 advantage in the opening set, Delaware (9-5, 5-2) rattled off a 7-2 run to knot the score at 10-10. With the count still tied at 16-16, the Tribe edged ahead by scoring four of the next five points to build a three-point lead, forcing a UD timeout. The Blue Hens briefly narrowed the margin to two, 20-18, following the break in action, but W&M pulled ahead with a 4-1 spurt and held on for the opening-set win, 25-22. Smith and Meyers led the Tribe with five kills apiece, while Schwem dished out seven assists.
 
The Tribe utilized a 6-1 run early in the second frame to build a 10-5 lead following a kill by Ryann Love. Delaware cut the margin to just one on multiple occasions, but W&M scored six of the final nine points to close out the set. Smith came up big again with a team-high six kills on a .750 hitting percentage.
 
The third set was closely contested an featured 13 ties, and neither team led by more than three points, but UD scored three of the final four points to secure the set. Smith totaled five kills on a .364 hitting percentage, while Kahren tallied eight digs.
 
After trailing 8-4 early in the fourth set, W&M called a timeout and then charged back to knot the score at 12-12. Although the count was still tied at 17-17, the Tribe broke the set open with a pivotal 5-0 run, punctuated with back-to-back kills by Katherine Arnason, and closed out the match by scoring the final three points. Arnason led the Tribe with five kills and a .455 hitting percentage, while Kahren recorded 11 digs.
 
W&M will close out its weekend series versus the Blue Hens at Kaplan Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. A live broadcast will be available on FloVolleyball.
