Erin Griffin Tallies Goal in Field Hockey Setback at Northeastern

DEBHAM, Mass. – Junior Erin Griffin scored her second goal of the season on Friday afternoon, but William & Mary field hockey dropped a 4-1 decision at Northeastern in a CAA road tilt.

Trailing 3-0 entering the fourth quarter, Griffin drew the Tribe closer, scoring less than a minute into the final frame. The Green and Gold scored on the counter following a turnover off a Northeastern penalty corner. Graduate student Mollie Schuma drove the ball to the left endline, before centering a pass to Griffin who knocked it into the left side of the cage. It was Griffin's third career goal, while it marked Schuma's second assist of the season and fifth of her career.

The Huskies though tacked on a fourth goal from Mak Graves in the 53rd minute to provide the final margin.

Graduate student Maddie George finishing with nine saves in cage for the Tribe.

After a scoreless first quarter, Northeastern (5-6, 1-1 CAA) found the scoring column first off a rebound less than four minutes into the second quarter. George stopped Lauren Rowe's initial hard shot from the right side. The rebound spilled over into the middle of the area where Lara Taylor collected and scored into the left side of the cage.

The Huskies extended the lead to 2-0 scoring off a penalty corner with four minutes remaining in the half. On the play, Graves passed the ball back to Rowe along the left side, and the senior scored her seventh goal of the season to push the margin to two.

NU added another off a penalty corner in the 36th minute. At the left post, Lilly Smith redirected a shot-turned pass by Rowe from the middle of the area down and into the cage.

The home team held a 14-6 advantage in shots and a 10-3 margin in penalty corners.
