WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Senior setter
Amy Schwem became the seventh player in program history to reach 2,000 assists, but the effort was not enough as William & Mary volleyball fell to UNC Wilmington 3-2 (25-13, 15-25, 25-13, 18-25, 13-15) on Sunday at Kaplan Arena.
The Tribe (8-13, 4-8 CAA) were paced by 23 assists from Schwem and
Bella Easton.
Maddie Meyers and
Katherine Arnason added 16 kills a piece as W&M settled for a weekend split with the Seahawks.
The opening set went the way of the home team as William & Mary cruised out a 10-4 lead following an ace by Lindsey Kahren. The Tribe later went on a 6-1 scoring run that extended the lead to double digits. Meyers had five kills in the opener.
UNC Wilmington (6-13, 3-9) evened the match in the second set with a 10-point victory.
In set three, the Tribe bounced back with a scoring run of six straight points that extended their lead to 13-5. They cruised from there, taking advantage of several UNCW attack errors and a pair of late kills from
Eleanor Stothoff.
The fourth stanza was the most even of the match, but a late 6-0 run by the visitors proved costly as the Seahawks won 25-18 to force a fifth set. UNCW would hold serve for the duration of set five, going ahead 11-8 before scoring the final two points of the match to win.
Kahren added 17 digs in the losing effort.
Nicole Smith also chipped in with 15 kills, while
Sabrina Malcolm netted seven total blocks.
