WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary filed hockey celebrated Senior Day in style on Sunday afternoon at Busch Field. The Tribe scored a season-high three goals and posted season-bests of 18 shots and 13 on goal in rolling to the victory.
Seniors
Mollie Schuma and
Sara Bartzen as well as sophomore
Mackinzie Brown each scored in the Tribe victory. Brown scored her first collegiate goal to start things, while Bartzen added her third of the season adn Schuma the fifth of her career. Seniors
Kellen Richbourg and
Maddie McGaughey notched assists in their final regular-season home matches, while junior
Erin Griffin picked up the first helper of her career.
W&M (2-14) broke through for the game's first goal in the closing minute of the first quarter. Off a penalty corner, Richbourg found Brown on the left side of the area, and the sophomore defender ripped a shot on goal that deflected off a defender's stick and into the upper left corner of the goal. It was Richbourg's team-leading third assist of the season.
The advantage remained 1-0 over the next 30 minutes thanks in large part to the play of freshman goalkeeper
Emma Cari. The Green and Gold rookie made six saves in the opening three frames, but none bigger than her diving stop to keep a deflected shot by Longwood's Madison Wiley out of the cage in the final minute of the third quarter.
The Tribe put the game out of reach with two goals just a 1:25 apart in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter. Bartzen extended the Tribe lead to 2-0 in the 47th minute. On the play, Griffin found space in the middle of the area off a pass from the top of the circle. She fed forward to Bartzen who cleaned it up in front for the marker.
Less the two minutes later, Schuma scored the Tribe's third goal of the afternoon. The assist was the eighth of McGaughey's career and first of the season. It also marked Schuma's first tally of the season.
Longwood (4-11) closed the margin to 3-1 thanks to a goal off a penalty corner with five minutes remaining from Zoe Tierney.
Cari finished with six saves on the afternoon in 51 minutes of scoreless action. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus came on for the final nine minutes and tallied two saves.
W&M held an 18-15 advantage in shots, including a 13-9 cushion in chances on frame. The Lancers tallied nine penalty corners compared to the Tribe's eight, which marked the second most for W&M this season.
