Field Hockey Drops Season Finale at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – William & Mary field hockey closed out the season with a 10-1 setback at Monmouth on Friday afternoon.

In a game with major CAA Tournament implications, the Hawks (11-6, 3-3 CAA) scored at least twice in each period on the way to securing the final spot in the conference championship.

Junior Natasha Browning scored her first collegiate goal off a penalty corner in the closing minutes of the opening half to give the Tribe a surge going into the locker room. Junior Emme Schwartz and graduate student Maddie McGaughey recorded their second assists of the season on the play.

The home side broke through just over five minutes into the contest off a penalty corner. Anna Moors converted from the top of the circle to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

W&M had three chances to draw even in the middle stages of the opening frame. Off the Tribe's initial penalty corner of the game, senior Kellen Richbourg's shot from the left side of the area was blocked by Monmouth goalkeeper Jessie Eiselin.

Graduate student Maddie McGaughey and senior Pyper Friedman each had backhand shots in the 8th and 13th minutes, but neither opportunity could find the mark.

Monmouth extended its lead to 2-0 with just 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Johanna Karlhuber found Lauren Relik at the back post for the game's second goal.

The Hawks added to its lead with two goals just 27 seconds apart in the second quarter. Moors notched her second goal of the match off a penalty corner, before Jess Tucker tipped in a long pass from India Shakespeare to push the margin to 4-0 in the 21st minute.

The Tribe increased the pace over the remainder of the opening half, generating five penalty corners and putting three shots on frame. Browning finally broke through on W&M's final chance of the first half. Off a penalty corner, Browning scored into the right side boards at the back post off classmate Emme Schwartz's pass from the top of the circle.

Monmouth put to rest any comeback chances with six second-half goals, including two in the third quarter. Lily Ricks scored just over two minutes into the frame, before Tucker scored her second off a penalty corner with less than a minute left in the frame. The home team added four more in the fourth for the final margin. Moors and Tucker each posted a hat trick, while Calista Schwartz collected five assists.
