WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— Gabe Ruitenberg posted a goal and an assist for the William & Mary men's soccer team on Saturday night, but the Tribe dropped a 3-2 decision to Campbell at Martin Family Stadium.
Both initial shots of the evening belonged to the Camels, with the first being blocked and the second barely going over the crossbar.
The first momentum swing of the match came in the 17
th minute, when Ruitenberg seemed to have a breakaway look at goal for the Tribe.
He was then was taken down from behind just outside the box and after a discussion between the officials, the Campbell player was shown a red card to put the visitors down a player for the rest of the game.
Ruitenberg would also help the Tribe make the most of their newfound man-advantage just five minutes later. The sophomore took a pass from
Sam Delgado and snuck behind the defense before blasting a shot to put the Green and Gold up 1-0 for his third goal of the year.
Both sides had chances in the following minutes, the Camels to equalize and the Tribe to expand their lead, but none of the shot attempts were able to find the target.
That was until the Camels found the back of the net in the 38
th minute off a volley from the right side of the box.
As the half wound down
Diogo Branco fired a shot from the top of the box to try and put W&M (4-10-1, 2-4-1 CAA) back in front, but the Campbell (8-5-4, 3-3-1 CAA) keeper made the save and the match headed to the break 1-1.
Shots through the first 45 minutes were 7-5 in favor of the Camels.
After Ruitenberg had a bid for goal saved early in the second half, Campbell struck again to take a 2-1 lead in the 66
th minute. The visitors would quickly enhance their lead eight minutes later to make it a 3-1 game.
With their backs against the wall the Tribe responded by turning up the offensive intensity.
Tre Barrett placed a shot on frame that was saved in the 75
th minute, but no more than 40 seconds later W&M was able to make it a one-goal game.
Ruitenberg played the role of table setter this time, centering a nice ball to a
Thor Sigurjonsson just outside the 6-yard box. The freshman Sigurjonsson arrived right on time at the back post to beat the keeper and make it a 3-2 game with his first career goal.
The assist was the first of the season for Ruitenberg who now has seven points on the year.
Despite pushing for an equalizer and posing some threatening opportunities, that was the last shot on goal the Tribe would generate, dropping the match 3-2.
The loss eliminates W&M from postseason play. The final shot tally read 13-12 in favor of the Tribe.
