Branco's 3 Points Leads Men's Soccer to Win Over Seawolves in Season Finale

STONY BROOK, N.Y.— Diogo Branco's three points highlighted the William & Mary men's soccer team's season finale on Saturday, as the Tribe took down Stony Brook 2-0 on Long Island.

The Tribe wasted no time trying to break the scoring open on a sunny afternoon, taking three shots in the first 10 minutes.

Branco fired a pair of shots that went off target, while Webb Kosich had a bid for goal blocked away in the 7th minute, and the game remained scoreless.

Things settled down over the next 20 minutes with the team's battling for possession. That was until Branco decided to try his hand at goal again in the 30th minute.

The Tribe junior took a pass from Thor Sigurjonsson and fired a high arcing shot from 30 yards out. Stony Brook's keeper was unable to get to it, despite a diving effort, and Branco had given W&M a 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season.

The assist was the second of Sigurjonsson's freshman campaign.

Before the half came to an end the Seawolves attempted to tie the game, but Cole McNally was up to the task in net for the Tribe, making the save to send the visitors to the break with a one-goal lead.

Shots were 7-3 after 45 minutes in favor of W&M.

Ryan Eapen replaced McNally in net in the second half and immediately made a stop in the 48th minute for the Tribe.

Branco found himself in the middle of the action again in the 58th minute.

After collecting a bouncing ball he played it forward to Sam Delgado, who bulldozed his way past a defender and beat the SBU keeper to make it a 2-0 Tribe lead.

The goal was the team-leading fifth of the season for Delgado, while Branco became the third Tribe player this year with a goal and an assist in the same game.

Now with a multi-goal lead, the Tribe focused on keeping the Seawolves off the board and were successful. Stony Brook was unable to get another shot on goal until the 85th minute which was scooped up by Eapen.

W&M's stellar defense led to chances on the counterattack for the Tribe, with Aidan Morrison having a shot saved and Gabe Ruitenberg and Alex Kochell having shot attempts blocked.

SBU took one last try for goal in the 88th minute but missed the target and the Tribe left Long Island with a 2-0 win to end the season.

The Tribe finished the year 5-10-1 and 3-4-1 in the CAA. The final shot total read 14-11 in favor of W&M with McNally making one save and Eapen two.
