WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— Two early goals were the difference on Sunday afternoon as the William & Mary women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest to Hofstra at Martin Family Stadium.
After an early shot by
Leah Iglesias was saved, the visiting Pride wasted no time getting themselves acclimated on a beautiful Sunday in Williamsburg.
Jazzy Lorenz made the save on the Hofstra's first shot attempt, but in the 12
th minute the Pride was awarded a penalty and converted to give themselves a 1-0 lead.
After a shot from
Lindsay Wilson missed high a minute later, Hofstra went on the counterattack to go up 2-0 in the 15
th minute.
W&M would get their fair share of shot attempts before the half came to a close, but the Hofstra defense was often in the right place at the right time, blocking a handful of the chances.
Ava Lewis would place a shot on-frame as time wound down in the half, trying to get the Tribe on the board. Her header was saved by the Hofstra keeper though, and the Pride would take a 2-0 lead to the break.
Shots were 9-5 in favor of the Tribe at the half.
Iglesias would take another shot to kick off the second half but missed the target. After that both teams engaged in a physical stalemate in the midfield.
The next shot of the match wouldn't be registered until the 68
th minute when Iglesias would again miss the target with her try.
Ivey Crain would have a good look from just outside the 18-yard box 10 minutes later but narrowly missed the left post.
Alyssa Kenealy had maybe the best chance of the day for W&M from near the penalty spot, rattling the crossbar in the 85
th minute.
Hofstra continued to cling to their 2-0 lead down the stretch holding off the Tribe and taking a road victory despite attempting no shots in the final 45 minutes.
The final shot total read 16-5 in favor of the Tribe. Lorenz made a pair of stops on the afternoon for W&M.
