WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— Ivey Crain found the back of the net in both halves for the William & Mary women's soccer team, propelling them to a 2-0 victory over Drexel on Thursday night at Martin Family Stadium.
The two teams took a while to feel each other out on a brisk night in Williamsburg. The only scoring chance in the first 15 minutes came from
Leah Iglesias who rattled the left post from the middle of the box in the 6
th minute.
Drexel's (3-8-4, 1-4-3 CAA) first shot came a little over 10 minutes later when
Jazzy Lorenz made her first save of the game for the Tribe.
The Dragons best chances of the night would come in a flurry in the 37
th minute, however.
Off a free kick from just outside the box Lorenz was forced to make a leaping save which led to a dangerous rebound. One Dragon was able to fire a shot from just outside the 6-yard box, but Tribe defenders were in the way to block it. That chance caromed directly to another Drexel player on the doorstep, but her shot found the same fate, being blocked away by W&M for a corner.
The Green and Gold used the momentum from that defensive stand to create a chance for Crain five minutes later.
Peyton Costello played a long ball up the left side that found Crain in stride. The Tribe junior forward danced her way around the keeper, and another Drexel defender, before finding the back of the unattended net to make it 1-0 W&M (8-8-0, 3-5-0 CAA).
Costello, who just this week was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Freshman list, picked up the assist for her second of the season.
The Tribe would take that lead to dressing room, as shots sat in favor of the hosts 6-5 through 45 minutes.
With both teams needing three points to keep their hopes at a postseason berth alive, the Dragons came out aggressive, taking the first two shots of the half.
Both attempts missed the frame, but they were able to turn a shot on goal in the 67
th minute. Luckily for the Tribe, Lorenz was once again up to the task, making a nice save to her right.
The W&M netminder would wrap the evening with five saves in total, adding stops in the 77
th and 88
th minutes as well.
Crain would provide the Tribe with an insurance goal in the 82
nd minute, sneaking her way behind the backline to meet up with a pass from
Elaina Longjohn. Crain fired from just outside the penalty spot with the ball tipping off the hands of the keeper and into the back of the goal.
Following the strike, the Tribe successfully coasted to the finish, securing a 2-0 victory in front of the home crowd.
The pair of goals brings Crain to seven tallies on the season, matching her production from a year ago. The performance also marked the fifth time in her career she has posted two goals in the same game.
The final shot total ended up even, 12-12.
