Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Elon Gets the Better of Women's Soccer

ELON, N.C.— Elaina Longjohn brought the William & Mary women's soccer team even with first-place Elon in the 71st minute, before the Phoenix would ultimately use a late goal to take the match 2-1.

The first quality chance of the evening belonged to the Green and Gold when Leila Greene played a long ball ahead to Ivey Crain, who found her way behind the defense just 45 seconds in.

With the keeper coming out of from her position, Crain quickly fired toward the top right of the net but missed just wide.

The Tribe seemed to own the momentum for the early parts of the first half, maintaining possession in the attacking end.

Lindsay Wilson tried a shot attempt of her own in the 14th minute, but the try was saved by the Elon keeper towards the top left part of the goal.

After a having other chances thwarted by the Elon backline, Mia Suchora took a crack at goal from 25 yards out in the 35th minute but had it saved on a short hop. The lone shot for Elon in the half came moments later, but never reached the target after being blocked by the Tribe defense.

Peyton Costello took the final shot of the half for either side in the 44th minute, but her shot found the same fate as Suchora's, swallowed up by the goalie.

The two sides entered the halftime break in a scoreless draw with W&M holding a 4-1 advantage in shots.

Wilson took the first shot of the half 10 minutes into the second frame, but once again the Elon keeper was up to the task, sprawling to her right to make the stop.

The Phoenix were the ones who struck first, despite the Tribe holding most of the chances, when they scored in the 62nd minute to take a 1-0 lead.

W&M's answer took no less than 10 minutes, with Leah Iglesias finding a streaking Longjohn. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native then fended off a defender and beat the keeper to equalize the match 1-1.

The tally was the first of the season for Longjohn, while the assist was the fourth of the year for Iglesias. Mia Suchora earned a secondary assist on the play for her second helper of the season.

Just as the Tribe did, the Phoenix quickly responded to take the lead back, finding room behind the backline and scoring from the left side of the box with just under seven minutes remaining.

Costello quickly put up a bid for an equalizer that was saved in the 85th minute, but the best chance for W&M to tie came with only a minute left.

Off a Tribe corner the ball found its way to Wilson just outside the penalty spot. The sophomore fired a shot that caromed off the crossbar high in the air and hit off a couple players inside the 6-yard box before the play was blown dead for a handball.

That was the last shot attempt for the Tribe as they dropped the first of a weekend road trip in North Carolina 2-1.

Shots on the evening ended even at 11-11.
