PHILADELPHIA, Pa.— Ivey Crain's goal in the 59
th minute proved to be enough to keep William & Mary (4-0-3) women's soccer unbeaten on Thursday evening, beating Drexel (4-3-0) on the road 2-1.
W&M opens their conference schedule with a win, as the match served as the CAA lid-lifter.
The Tribe has the longest unbeaten streak to start a season in program history after going unbeaten in the non-conference for the first time ever.
The Green and Gold started attacking right out of the gate, as Crain attempted five shots in the first 20 minutes of the opening half with three of the attempts being on goal. The Dragons would be the ones to score first however, with a goal in the 18
th minute putting the hosts up 1-0.
After
Zoe Doughty made a save for the Tribe to keep it a 1-0 game,
Julie Shackford's squad kept attacking and were rewarded in the 34
th minute.
Crain fired a shot off from just outside the 18 that was blocked by a Dragon, but
Molly Widderich collected the rebound and quickly placed another shot on goal. Widderich's shot on goal was ticked by a Drexel defender and then found the back of the net. The tally was Widderich's first career goal, with Crain's original shot earning an assist.
Both keepers made saves in the final 10 minutes of the first half to keep things 1-1 as the match reached halftime.
Doughty ended the half with five saves for W&M on her way to seven for the match. The Tribe held the shots advantage 10-7 through 45 minutes.
The second half started with both teams battling back and forth before the Tribe's top goal scorer put the visitors in front in the 59
th minute. Crain was able to split between two Dragon defenders before firing off a sharp angle shot from inside the box that slid past the Drexel keeper. The goal was Crain's fourth of the season, while
Leah Iglesias picked up her first assist of the year on the play.
W&M searched for more after the go-ahead goal, getting chances in the 67
th and 70
th minute from
Kayleigh Shackford and Crain, but both attempts were saved.
The Tribe's back line stayed strong down the stretch against a Drexel team that was previously unbeaten at home. When the Dragons had chances to draw even, Doughty answered the call, making all three of her second half saves in the final 15 minutes.
Doughty's final save came in the 88
th minute as the Tribe cleared away the trouble to seal a 2-1 road win.
W&M out-shot the Dragons 16-11 on the night, however all but three of Drexel's shots ended up on goal, giving them an 8-7 advantage in that category. Corners were even at four apiece.
Crain ended with a staggering 12 shots in the match, with six finishing on-frame.
