NEWARK, Del.— Nora Green-Orset provided the lone goal of the match on Sunday afternoon, as the William & Mary women's soccer team expanded their unbeaten streak to eight with a 1-0 win at Delaware.
The Tribe struck early via an 8
th minute corner kick. After the ball bounced around the box, Green-Orset blocked a Delaware clearance attempt and redirected the ball into the net, giving W&M a 1-0 lead. The goal was her second of the year.
Both teams battled evenly with not many chances materializing for the remainder of the half, and the Tribe took their one goal lead into the break.
Zoe Doughty made two saves in the first half on long shots by Delaware. The shot total sat even at six through 45 minutes and each team put two shots on-frame.
The Green and Gold came out of halftime searching for an insurance goal, with
Ivey Crain having a shot saved in the 53
rd minute and
Jillian O'Toole's shot going high in the 56
th.
Delaware had a chance to equalize eight minutes later off a long free kick. The ball was headed towards goal by a Blue Hen, but just snuck outside the near post.
The Blue Hens best chance to tie may have come in the 72
nd minute, when a Delaware attacker broke through the Tribe backline, but missed the target from 15 yards out.
As time wound down the Tribe kept attacking, rather than sitting on their heels. Crain was inches away from doubling the W&M lead when she rattled the near post in the 88
th minute.
William & Mary successfully played keep-away from the Blue Hens in the match's waning moments to secure a 1-0 win and remain unbeaten on the year.
Doughty stopped all three shots that came her way and posted the Green and Gold's fifth clean sheet on the year. W&M outshot the Blue Hens 13-10.
The 5-0-3 mark expands upon the best start in program history for the Tribe, as they sit at 2-0-0 in CAA play.
