HAMPTON, Va. – William & Mary Volleyball (8-7, 3-2 CAA) returned to the win column in dominant fashion Saturday with a victory in its first match at Hampton, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-23).
Winning the first two sets by a 10-point margin, the Tribe illustrated their offensive depth with strong performances throughout their lineup.
Sarah Callender and
Emma Minnick paced the team with 12 kills apiece and
Sabrina Malcolm crushed nine of her own with a .571 hitting percentage.
Callender finished the match with a double-double, adding 10 digs to her 12 kills. Minnick picked up 17 assists in the match, leading both teams.
Without allowing a lead change or a tied score in the first set, the Green and Gold got in front early, scoring on a pair of
Katherine Arnason kills to begin the match, and held onto their advantage. As a team, the Tribe hit with 64% accuracy in the first set, committing only one error on the attack.
A 6-0 run early in the set extended the Tribe's lead to 11-4, as
Taylor Burrell picked up the team's first service ace and Callender knocked in two kills. Callender hit .714 through the first set, recording five kills with no errors.
Maddie Meyers and
Sabrina Malcolm led the offensive charge in the second set, each picking up five kills. Getting off to a 2-0 start for the second consecutive set, the Tribe took their lead early and didn't let go.
For the first time in the match, the Pirates tied the score at 3-3 with a block, but the Tribe responded in turn with kills from
Olivia Esposito and Malcolm. Meyers added a solo block to the Tribe's second 6-0 run of the match as W&M jumped out to an 11-4 lead once again.
Amy Schwem earned eight assists in the second set, assisting on two of the final four points to take the set. Meyers capped the second set, 25-15, as she crushed three back-to-back kills.
Falling behind early in the decisive third set, the Tribe rallied to take the match in straight sets. With the first lead changes of the match and 14 tie scores, the final set proved to be a back-and-forth challenge.
With Meyers and Callender adding four to their total kills in the third frame and five assists from
Bella Easton and Minnick, the Tribe managed to hold on in the final set, 25-23, on their way to victory.
The Tribe will attempt to sweep the weekend as they continue their weekend at Hampton at 1 p.m. on Sunday to wrap up their four-game road trip.
