Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep of Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – Holding Hampton to just five points in the final frame, William & Mary volleyball (9-7, 4-2 CAA) completed the weekend sweep of the Pirates without dropping a set.

Following Saturday's victory in straight sets, the Tribe earned their second win of the weekend, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-5), at Hampton on Sunday.

Nearly matching their season-high .330 attack efficiency from Saturday's contest, the Tribe hit at a .327 clip as a team, led by Olivia Esposito's .667 percentage (9 – 1 – 12) in the match.

Maddie Meyers's 11 kills paced the team as she brought her weekend total to 23 with an impressive 3.83 kills per set. Esposito paired her nine kills with four blocks, including a solo block, and lead the Tribe with 11.5 points in the match.

The Tribe continued their dominant performance in every phase of the game, holding the Pirates to a 2.1% hitting percentage and outscoring them 53.0 to 28.0 in the match.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle, as the Pirates took the first point of the match and the teams produced seven tied scores. Freshman Katherine Arnason tied the set at 18-18 with her third kill of the match, and Esposito and Meyers followed with kills of their own to take the lead.

Trading points in the later half of the first frame, the Tribe held onto their advantage as Meyers added three kills in the final four points of the set to take it 25-21.

In each of the second and third sets, the Pirates took the first point and the Tribe responded by taking a decisive lead.

Wearing down the Pirates' offense, W&M stepped up in the final frame and allowed only five points from the opposition. Three Tribe players added multiple kills in the third set – Meyers (6), Sabrina Malcolm (3) and Eleanor Stothoff (2) – and the team didn't allow a block by the Pirates in the set.

The Tribe capped their weekend with a 3-0 run as Sarah Callender and Malcolm each smashed their seventh kills of the match to secure the win in the third set, 25-5.
