Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Drexel's Late Goal Forces Men's Soccer to Settle for Tie, 2-2

WILLIMASBURG, Va.—Drexel found the back of the net with 66 seconds to play, stealing a draw from the William & Mary men's soccer team, 2-2, at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday.

The contest was the Tribe's 'Be The Match' game for bone marrow transplant fundraising, while also honoring the 1983 men's soccer team at halftime.

The hosts came out of the gate hot, converting an opportunity in the 6th minute. Lucas Caldas got free and ripped a shot that was saved, but the rebound found Evan Rabush, who finished the play off making it 1-0.

The rest of the half was evenly played with each team getting chances here and there, but unable to score. The match hit the half with William & Mary (2-6-2, 1-2-1) leading 1-0 with Drexel (5-1-3, 2-1-2) narrowly leading in shots 5-4.

Coming out for the second half, the Dragons put on a frivolous attack to equalize just two minutes into the frame.

With the game back to level, each team had near misses in the middle of the half trying to take control of the match.

The Green and Gold pulled momentum on their side in the 75th minute when Ian Krajna took a threatening shot that just missed, then Merlin Luke-Miny took back to back shots moments later off a pair of W&M corner kicks.

Using that boost of energy, the Tribe hopped in front in the 81st minute. Aidan Morrison led a counterattack before eventually leaving the ball off to Gabe Ruitenberg. The freshman let off a long shot from outside the box that beat the Drexel keeper and made it 2-1.

Moments later the Dragons attempted to respond, taking a shot in the 84th minute that was saved by Cole McNally, but led to a rebound and second chance towards an empty net. That was until Dylan Middlebrook slid in to block the shot right before it reached the back of the net, preserving the 2-1 lead.

However, the potential game saving effort proved to not be enough, with Drexel scoring in the 89th minute off a header to escape with a 2-2 draw.

The final shot total was 14-11 in favor of the Dragons. Cole McNally finished with seven saves for the Tribe, who ended up with six shots on goal for the day.
