Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – William & Mary volleyball (7-7, 2-2 CAA) fell in a hard-fought, five-set battle to host Campbell (6-8, 3-1 CAA) on Sunday, 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 28-26, 20-25, 15-9).

This is the first five-set match which the Tribe have not emerged victorious in the season, previously taking wins over Tennessee Tech, Cornell, and two from Charleston in five frames.

Despite the final score, the Tribe made a significant shift in their offensive approach from Saturday's match, leading the match with 61 kills, just a kill shy of meeting their highest single-match mark on the season.

A consistent presence in yesterday's quiet offense, Sarah Callender had a breakout match. Hitting at a .408 clip, she set a career high in kills for the second consecutive weekend. Tying her best from last weekend, 18 in five sets, in only the first three sets, she exploded for a total of 25 kills.

Pacing both offenses in the match, Callender also recorded the highest in individual single-match kills on the season, which was previously set at 23 by Taylor Burrell twice last weekend.

The attack game was strong from the start, as Olivia Esposito opened the match with a kill. Trailing by six points mid-first set, the Tribe went on a 4-0 run with two Taylor Burrell kills and another from the swing of Sabrina Malcolm to pull within two points. The Green and Gold survived set point twice, with kills by Esposito and Callender, but the Camels took the first frame.

Campbell and W&M traded sets throughout the match, and the Tribe evened the score after two. For the first time in the weekend, Campbell took the first point of the set.

Freshman Katherine Arnason started in the second, going on to add a pair of kills and a block assist in the frame. Trailing or tied to that point, a Callender kill started a 4-0 run that enabled the Tribe to take their first lead of the set with an Amy Schwem service ace.

Limiting the Camels to eight kills, the Tribe held them to a .000 attacking percentage in the second set.

Trading wins once again, the Camels regained their match advantage over W&M with a victory in the third set.

With a balanced effort on the attack in the fourth set, Callender, Arnason and Burrell all recorded multiple kills and the team added only one attacking error for a combined .414 hitting percentage. Sabrina Malcolm notched two more block assists in the fourth set, bringing her total blocks for the match to 7 (2-5).

The Camels came out swinging in the decisive fifth set, running up the score early. Despite Callender adding her 25th kill to survive match point, 14-9, Campbell held off the Tribe for the win.
