Volleyball Falls in First Match at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – William & Mary volleyball (7-6, 2-1 CAA) fell to Campbell (5-8, 2-1 CAA) on the road in the teams' first matchup as conference opponents, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-23).

Despite the Tribe opening all three frames with the leading point, the Camels were able to turn it around each time towards a victory in straight sets.

Amy Schwem earned her fifth double-double of the year, recording 13 assists and 12 digs in the contest. She also added a service ace.

In the first set, assists from Sabrina Malcolm and Sarah Callender, and a service ace from reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Week Taylor Burrell got the Tribe started in scoring. Aided by Campbell errors in the first set, the Tribe managed to keep the score close, until a pair of 3-0 runs extended the Camels' lead to 17-9. Callender had a consistent presence, making no errors and adding a pair of kills.

The Tribe came back with more energy for the second set, gaining the first point on a Campbell attack error and holding onto the lead until the midpoint of the set. Stothoff got off to a strong start with three kills in the first few points, and the Tribe tripled their team total in kills in the second frame. Olivia Esposito added a point on a solo block to extend the Green and Gold's early lead to 9-6.

Campbell tied it up on three consecutive W&M attack errors and took their first lead of the set lead at 11-12, which they carried to their second set win, raising their advantage in the match to 2-0.

The decisive third set was a back-and-forth battle, with 13 tied scores and seven total lead changes in the frame. Callender had another strong set, adding four points, four kills and four digs, pacing the Tribe in both points and kills in the set.

A 4-0 run looked like it may have been the push the Tribe needed to overtake the Camels in the set, as four consecutive kills from Burrell, Callender (2) and Malcolm gave W&M the lead. For the last time in the match, the Camels battled back and secured the victory with only a two-point margin in the final frame.

The Tribe looks to pick up a win at Campbell on Sunday, with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m. at Gore Arena.
