WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— Lucas Caldas' goal in the 64
th minute lifted William & Mary men's soccer over Northeastern at home on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Tribe grabbed their first points of the year in the CAA standings.
W&M was put on the defensive out of the gate when a Northeastern attacker broke free for a shot in the 1
stminute.
Cole McNally was up for the early challenge, making a diving save to his left.
That early shot turned out to be one of the Huskies' only chances in the game, mustering up just one shot on goal over the last 89 minutes.
The Tribe became the aggressors in the 16
th minute when
Evan Rabush played a service into the box towards
Aidan Morrison. Morrison received the pass in stride and fired from 10 yards out, but his shot sailed just high.
Cole McNally was called on again in the 26
th minute when a Northeastern player broke free towards goal. McNally charged out from his position to shut down the chance with a slide and keep the game scoreless.
The match remained scoreless for the rest of the first half. Shots in the opening 45 minutes were even at five apiece.
W&M took firm control of the proceedings in the second frame, outshooting the Huskies 5-1.
Augie Cooper let off a shot in the 49
th minute that was scooped up by the Northeastern keeper but ignited the Tribe's attack to break the scoreless tie.
After the ball stayed planted in the W&M attacking half, Caldas provided the breakthrough 15 minutes later. The sophomore shook free down the right side, scoring his fourth goal of the year in the bottom right corner of the net.
The Tribe back line flexed its muscles in the match's last 25 minutes, keeping the ball out of the Huskies' attacking half and securing the 1-0 win.
William & Mary goes to 2-4-1 on the year and 1-1-0 in CAA play. Both Tribe wins this year are at home.
