Women's Soccer Remains Unbeaten in 0-0 Draw of Monmouth

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team had Monmouth on their heels for 90 minutes, but the goalkeeping won the night, Thursday, as the two sides drew 0-0.

The tie puts the Tribe at 5-0-4 on their season, marking the longest unbeaten start in program history. The record was previously held by the 1998 team.

The first quality chance of the match belonged to the Tribe, when Ivey Crain chased down a ball in traffic outside the 18. A Hawk defender collided with the keeper and Crain's shot towards the unattended net went just wide.

Minutes later, Crain made another attempt to break the scoreless tie off a pass from Gabriella Kurtas. Crain fired off a sharp angle shot that required a diving effort from the Hawks' goalie to keep it out.

These chances set the tone for the match with the Tribe constantly on the attack, and the Hawks trying to bend but not break.

As the first half came to a close, shots were even at four. The Tribe was able quadrupled that total by night's end, outshooting the Hawks 16-7.

William & Mary only allowed only one shot on-frame for Monmouth all game, but Cassandra Coster made some spectacular stops for the Hawks to keep the game scoreless in the second half.

Lindsay Wilson had an opportunity that was saved in the 70th minute, and moments the later the Tribe charged up the field again looking to break the tie.

Crain took a long pass from Kenna Zier and was in on goal, only to have her shot scooped up by the Hawks keeper.

The match seemed destined to end in a tie as things wound down, but the Tribe gave one last valiant effort to get past Coster.

Once again, Crain broke through the Monmouth backline in the 88th minute and fired off a shot that the Coster dove at to just steer away. The ball rebounded back towards midfield where Ginny Delacruz launched a high arching shot from 28 yards out. Coster once again made a spectacular diving save and the game ended in a scoreless draw a minute later.
