CONWAY, S.C.— The William & Mary (1-1-0) men's soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal first half deficit on Monday, as they fell to Coastal Carolina (1-1-0) in their first road match of the year 2-1.
Lucas Caldas provided the lone score for the Tribe in the 53
rd minute.
The hosts wasted no time getting on the board with a goal nine minutes into the first half, but the Tribe did their best to respond for a good part of the frame.
Just moments after surrendering the goal, the Green and Gold had a great opportunity when
Alfredo Bozalongo attempted a free kick from 25 yards out in the 12
th minute. The shot attempt was on-frame, but was just gotten to by the Chanticleer keeper in the bottom right portion of the goal.
Evan Rabush tried his luck in the 34
th minute with a quality strike that seemed to have a chance of sneaking in the top left portion of the goal before being saved.
W&M's momentum was halted minutes later when a penalty kick was awarded to the Chants and subsequently converted on, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead after the opening 45 minutes.
Having come back from a deficit to win the season opener, it seemed as though the Tribe were poised for another comeback when
Cole McNally made a sprawling save to set the tone for the second half just two minutes in.
After the McNally stop the Green and Gold attempted the game's next five shots which included the Caldas goal in the 53
rd minute.
Merlin Luke-Miny started the tic-tac-toe play in the midfield with a pass to
Aidan Morrison who played a well-placed through ball to Caldas. The sophomore was able to dance past a Chanticleer before charging on goal and burying his second career tally in the top right corner from 17 yards out.
The assist for Morrison served as his first career collegiate point in his second career game.
Trailing by just a goal for the first time since the opening half, the Tribe kept attacking but were unable to break through down the stretch.
Evan Rabush and Caldas highlighted W&M chances as the game wound down but had their shot attempts go wide and saved respectively to leave the final score at 2-1.
The final shot totals favored the Tribe by a tally of 14-11. Seven of William & Mary's shots were on goal, while six found the target for Coastal Carolina.
McNally made his second start in as many games for the Tribe and recorded three of his four saves in the second half to keep the squad within striking distance.
