WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— William & Mary (1-0-0) men's soccer hits the road for the first time in the 2023 campaign when it visits Coastal Carolina (0-1-0) on Monday at 4 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Tribe enters the contest following a comeback season-opening victory against Binghamton on Thursday.
TRIBE NOTES:
Last Time Out:
Alfredo Bozalongo earned a penalty kick in the 75th
minute and calmly buried the chance to push W&M past the Bearcats 2-1 at Martin Family Stadium on Thursday evening. The Tribe fell behind by a goal in the mid-part of the first half before
Gabe Ruitenberg found
Augie Cooper off a corner to equalize in the 39th minute.
Getting Off on The Right Foot:
The Tribe are now 4-2-1 in their last seven home openers after Thursday's win.
Chris Norris' squad is looking to start off with back-to-back wins for the second time in the last three years. The 2021 edition of the Green and Gold started off with consecutive home wins against St. Francis (Pa.) and George Washington.
Welcome To College Soccer:
Three freshmen made their collegiate debuts for the Tribe in the season opener. Ruitenberg picked up his first career point with the assist on the Cooper goal.
Aidan Morrison placed three shots on goal to kick-off his career, and
Evan Rabush played 33 minutes off the bench in his first collegiate action.
Dictating The Game:
William & Mary dominated the play throughout much of the 90 minutes against Binghamton on Thursday. W&M outshot the visitors 18-6 in the match and by a 10-2 margin in the second half alone. The Tribe also earned eight corners to the four generated by the Bearcats.
Series History:
Monday's meeting in Conway will serve as the 10th all-time between the Tribe and Coastal Carolina, while also serving as the rubber match in the series that currently sits at 4-4-1. W&M are 1-1-1 when visiting CCU Soccer Stadium. The Chanticleers took last year's meeting 4-2 in Williamsburg by rallying for four second half goals. The first meeting between the two dates back to October 1992.
Scouting the Chanticleers:
Coastal Carolina enters Monday's match having dropped their lid lifter on Thursday at home against Winthrop 2-0. Both Winthrop goals came in the second half.
The Chants boast 15 newcomers for the 2023 season with eight coming via transfer. Coach Shaun Docking's squad only returns five total goals from a season ago. Noe Santos is the returning leading scorer after posting four goals and three assists as a sophomore last season. No goalkeepers who saw action return from last year's team.
