PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – William & Mary women's soccer overwhelmed Temple to the tune a 4-0 season-opening victory at the Temple Sports Complex on Thursday night. The Tribe used its depth with waves of substitutes to wear down the home side, scoring late in the first half and adding a trio of goals in the game's final 17 minutes.
Junior
Leah Iglesias and sophomore
Nora Green-Orset each scored their first goals as members of the Tribe, while sophomore
Ivey Crain added the final two tallies just 20 seconds apart.
Iglesias, who came on as one of seven W&M reserves in the opening 45 minutes, gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead late in the first half. Senior
Ginny Delacruz gained possession near the midfield circle and sent a longball toward the top of the 18. Iglesias, a transfer from Hofstra, used a settling touch before flipping a shot into the right side of the goal in the 40th minute.
W&M used a set piece to push the lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute. Green-Orset headed home her first collegiate goal off a perfectly placed Kaleigh Shackford corner kick to extend the Tribe advantage.
The reigning CAA Rookie of the Year Crain took advantage of a pair of Temple miscues in the back end to put away two goals just 20 seconds apart. On the Tribe's third marker of the contest, Crain collected a failed Temple clearance off a
Sheridan Brummett deflection just outside the penalty area. After a settling touch, she ripped a shot inside the right post.
Just 20 ticks later in the 86th minute, Crain intercepted a pass from Temple goalkeeper Tamsin Bynoe and scored inside the left post from the penalty spot.
In total, 25 players saw action on Thursday night for the Tribe, including 18 that played at least 20 minutes. W&M used seven substitutions compared to just two for Temple in the first half.
The Tribe outshot Temple 15-8 on the night and 9-1 in attempts on frame. W&M also had a 56%-44% advantage in possession.
