Women's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Despite outshooting Saint Joseph's, 19-8, William & Mary women's soccer played to a scoreless draw with the Hawks on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field. Defensively, the Tribe recorded its second-straight shutout, marking the first time since 2011 that W&M recorded back-to-back clean sheets to start a season.

The Tribe, which is unbeaten through two games at 1-0-1 for the first time since 2017, had the better of possession and certainly threatened the St. Joe's goal at a higher clip. W&M put 10 of its 19 shots on frame, but Hawks' goalkeeper Katie Cappelletti made all 10 stops. W&M held a 10-3 cushion in chances on goal and had seven corner kicks compared to four for the home team.

Making her first start of the season, junior goalkeeper Morgan Wood, who was from nearby York, Pa., played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves. Over the last  two years  and over 400 minutes of action, Wood has a GAA of 0.22.

In the opening half, the Tribe picked up the pressure as the frame wore on. W&M attempted the period's final eight shots. Both sophomore Nora Green-Orset (35th minute) and freshman Paige Seitz (40th minute) attemped dangerous volleys off corner kicks in the final 10 minutes, but both were saved.

Over the final 45 minutes, W&M outshot Saint Joseph's, 8-3, including five shots on goal. Graduate student Kayleigh Shackford had a pair of chances from distance that were stopped by Cappelletti in the opening three minutes of the second half.

In the 68th minute, the Tribe had two of its more dangerous chances. Off a long service, senior Ginny Delacruz, who was in a foot race with the SJU GK, had her volley blocked. Sophomore Ivey Crain jumped on the rebound, but her chance was blocked away.

With just over seven minutes to go, Crain had another quality opportunity. Moon flick a pass into the right side of the area that her Crain ran on to. Unfortunately, her shot from 12 yards out went just high of the goal.

Shackford led W&M with five shots, while Crain had four. Both had two chances on goal.
