Northeastern Bests Tribe in CAA Championship Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.- Sixth seeded William & Mary fell 6-0 to third seeded Northeastern to open up the CAA Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The Tribe will play tomorrow at 11 a.m. in a must win elimination game.

Tribe starter Nate Knowles allowed two runs on three hits over the first 3.0 innings of the game. Tom Mayer followed, allowing one earned and striking out a pair over 3.0 innings before Nick Lottchea finished with 2.0 scoreless frames.

After retiring the Huskies in order in the first, Knowles allowed a pair of free passes and a single as Northeastern loaded the bases in the second. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead on a Luke Beckstein sac fly. A two-out single from Spenser Smith would bring in another run, making it 2-0 after two innings.

Cole Ragone would triple with one out in the third but the Tribe could not capitalize as Ragone was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a Luca Danos fly out to right. Knowles would strand a pair of runners to keep Northeastern off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame.

The Huskies struck again in the fourth as a two-out single from Mike Sirota plated a run making it 3-0. A two-out error from the Tribe in the bottom of the sixth would lead to three unearned runs for Northeastern.

Up Next: William & Mary will take on fourth seed and tournament host Charleston tomorrow morning for an 11 a.m. elimination game.
