Baseball's Season Ends With 2-1 Loss To Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.- William & Mary's baseball season ended as the Green and Gold dropped a 2-1 decision to Charleston in the CAA Tournament. The Tribe finished the 2023 campaign with a 32-25 record. As was the story all season long, William & Mary was fantastic on the mound in the season finale.

Starting pitcher Cory Wall pitched a season-high 5.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing just two runs on five hits. Rojo Prarie followed with 1.1 scoreless frames, allowing one hit. Carter Lovasz would come in and toss a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout.

The offensive star was Corey Adams who finished the day 3-4 with an RBI single. Nate Goranson was 2-4 with a run scored while Ben Williamson was 1-3 with an intentional walk and hit by pitch. Luca Danos was 1-3 with a single and sacrifice bunt.

With both starting pitchers locked in, the first scoring in the game did not take place until the Tribe half of the fourth inning. Goranson singled and moved to second as Jerry Barnes III walked. With two strikes and two outs, Adams ripped his second single in as many innings up the middle to score Goranson.

The lead would be short lived as Charleston would benefit from a lead off walk that would come around to score on a Trotter Harlan single, tying the game at 1-1. The Cougars would put two men on in the fifth, but Wall would get his sixth strikeout of the afternoon to keep Charleston off the scoreboard.

Once again it would be a lead off walk that would haunt the Tribe, this time in the sixth as Cougar would reach on a free pass and score on a Luke Smith single through the left side to make it a 2-1 game.

Adams would knock his third hit of the game to lead off the ninth and move to second on a Luca Danos sac bunt. With two outs and Adams on second, Charleston would elect to intentionally walk CAA Player of the Year Williamson putting men on first and second, but the Cougars would close out the game, ensuring the 2-1 win.

William & Mary finished the 2023 season with 32 wins, the 13th time eclipsing the 30 win mark in school history. The Tribe finished 22-8 at Plumeri Park, the most home wins by the program since the 2013 season.
