STONY BROOK, NY. - A clutch hit from
Joe Delossantos and 4.1 brilliant innings from
Cory Wall gave the Tribe a 7-5 extra-innings win on Saturday afternoon in New York. Delossantos' first hit of the game was worth the wait as the outfielder smashed a 2-0 pitch into the gap to score two and break a 5-5 tie in the 10th.
Wall picked up his fourth win on the season, allowing just one run on two hits over the final 4.1 innings of the game. The grad student struck out three and retired the final 10 men he faced.
The win assured the Tribe its fourth straight series win and a third straight CAA series victory. William & Mary out-hit Stony Brook 12-5 and only two of the five Seawolf runs were earned.
For the second straight day, a William & Mary catcher put the team up 1-0 in the top of the first.
Nate Goranson shot a double down the right field line to score
Ben Williamson in the game's opening frame.
Brian Craven worked two flawless frames, but Stony Brook would get to the Tribe bullpen in the third. The Seawolves took advantage of a pair of walks to score on a safety squeeze bunt, evening the score at 1-1.
William & Mary battled back in the top of the fourth as
Tank Yaghoubi and
Corey Adams roped back to back singles and both scored on a two-out double from
Ryan Bhojwani to deep straight away center. Goranson came through again in the fifth with a single to left, once again scoring Williamson to make it 4-1.
Stony Brook would take advantage of William & Mary miscues to tie the game up in the sixth. The Seawolves used a trio of walks, an error, and a single to plate three unearned runs and knot the game at 4-4. A pair of singles followed by a sac fly would give Stony Brook a 5-4 lead in the seventh.
The Tribe immediately tied the game back up in the eighth as
Luca Danos smashed a double to left and scored on a
Lucas Carmichael single. Wall held the Seawolves in check before the Tribe broke through in the 10th.
Carmichael drew a one out walk and moved to third on a single from Williamson. Both runners raced home on Delossantos' double to the gap in right center. Wall slammed the door in the bottom half to give the Green and Gold the series-clinching win.
Up Next: The Tribe will go for the sweep as the two teams meet for the series conclusion Sunday at noon.
