WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - William & Mary dropped a 6-3 decision to Delaware Friday evening at Plumeri Park.
Nate Goranson had a pair of doubles in the game and
Tank Yaghoubi had a pair of hits with an RBI. Tribe starter
Owen Pierce picked up the loss to make his record 4-4 on the year.
Delaware struck first plating three runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. The Hens saw five straight men get to the plate before Pierce retired the next three men to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Andrew Amato's two-run shot in the fourth would make it 5-0 Delaware.
The Tribe found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as
Ben Williamson walked and scored from first as Goranson doubled off the top of the wall in deep left center.
Tank Yaghoubi fired a two-strike pitch into center to plate Goranson and make it a 5-2 game.
After three shutout innings from
Tom Mayer, Delaware got back on the board with a pair of singles and a wild pitch to make it a four-run game. Goranson would hit his second double of the evening in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tribe could not push him home.
Rojo Prarie kept the Hens off the board in the eighth, before the Tribe chipped away at the Delaware lead.
Max Winters walked to lead off the frame and later came around to score on a Jerry Barnes two-out single.
Prarie battled out of a jam in the ninth to keep it a three run game but the Tribe could not generate offense in the ninth as Delaware took the 6-3 series opener.
Up Next: The Tribe and Blue Hens will be back in action tomorrow to continue with a doubleheader. The two teams will begin game one at 1:00 p.m. and game two will begin roughly 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
