Pair of Comebacks Lead To Doubleheader Sweep

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - Nate Goranson hit a pair of homers and knocked in eight men as the Tribe came from behind twice to sweep a doubleheader from Delaware Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. William & Mary took game one 8-5 and Corey Adams walk off single gave the home team a 8-7 win in game two. It is the second time this season Adams has walked off a CAA foe to give the Tribe a conference series win.

Carter Lovasz was the winning pitcher in game one, striking out three over the final 3.0 innings of the game. Lovasz upped his record to 4-1 on the season and retired the final eight men he faced in order. Cory Wall punched out seven over 4.2 innings of relief and did not allow a walk. Casey Green did not allow a run in his third start of the season.

Goranson was 1-2 with his fourth homer of the season in the victory and knocked in five men total. Williamson was also 1-2 and scored three runs, while Yaghoubi had three singles.

In game two, Goranson homered again and scored the tying run in the ninth, while Williamson added four hits. Corey Adams knocked a trio of hits and drove in three runs including the game winner. Nick Lottchea was strong for the Tribe, striking out four and allowing just two hits over 3.0 innings of scoreless work to pick up the win.

The Tribe struck in the first inning as a pair of free passes and a Yaghoubi single loaded the bases. Lucas Carmichael would send a shot to center for a sac fly to plate Williamson and give the Green and Gold a 1-0 lead.

Delaware struck back in the fourth as a pair of singles and a double pushed across a run for the Blue Hens in the fourth to tie the game. The visitors took the lead in the fifth as two singles and a double would score a pair of runs and make it a 3-1 game.

The Green and Gold would take the lead back in the bottom half as Goranson launched a 2-0 fastball over the wall in left center. The three-run shot gave the Tribe a 4-3 advantage. Joey Lonynd's two-run shot in the seventh put Delaware back on top.

The Tribe bounced back in the bottom half to take the lead once again. Goranson worked a bases loaded walk to tie the game and Max Winters lifted a sac fly to deep right, scoring Williamson to make it 6-5 Tribe.

William & Mary would find insurance in the eighth as Williamson would knock in Noah Zertuche with a single up the middle, and Goranson earned his fifth RBI of the afternoon with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to score Luca Danos as the Tribe took a three-run lead. Lovasz would work a one, two, three ninth to secure the win.

In game two, the Blue Hens got out to a hot start scoring three runs on three hits and a Tribe error in the first. The Tribe battled back in the second as Corey Adams shot a single up the middle to score Lucas Carmichael and Joe Delossantos to make it a one run game.

Delaware scored again in the third, stringing a pair of hits together to get a run back. The Blue Hens tacked on again in the fourth, plating a pair of runs on three straight singles. The Tribe dented Delaware's lead in the fifth as Goranson lifted his second homer of the day over the wall in left. The two-run shot made it a 6-4 game.

A lead off error in the sixth would bite the Tribe as Delaware plated an unearned run, but the home team would battle back in the bottom half. Delossantos manufactured a run by walking, stealing second, and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 7-5.

William & Mary had men in scoring position in seventh and eighth but could not break through. In the ninth, Williamson led off with his second double of the game and scored on a Goranson double. Goranson would move to third on a Cole Ragone single and tie the game touching home on a passed ball.

Back to back walks to Carmichael and Delossantos loaded the bases for Adams who rocketed a single up the middle to score Ragone and give the Tribe the doubleheader sweep and series win.

Up Next: William & Mary will head to VMI for its final midweek game of the season on Tuesday evening.
