WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Justyce Barber scored a career-high six goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to help lift the William & Mary lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 victory against Delaware at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Although W&M (6-5, 2-1) trailed by three goals, 11-8, early in the fourth quarter, the Tribe rallied back with a 4-0 run to take the lead with 3:55 remaining.
UD (5-6, 1-2) answered less than a minute later with a goal by Danielle Livornese to send the game into overtime, but W&M's defense held the Blue Hens scoreless the rest of the way and Barber provided the game-winner with 2:03 left in the extra session.
With the victory, W&M improves to 2-0 in overtime this season, while it owns a 3-0 mark in games decided by one goal.
Tribe Standouts
In addition to scoring a career-high six goals, which ranks tied for 11th in W&M's record book, Barber also dished out an assist and collected a ground ball and caused turnover.
Sarah Cipolla and
Miranda Bate also came up big offensively with two goals apiece, while Cipolla added a team-high five draw controls to go with two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Bate also posted three ground balls.
Defensively,
Courtney Vasquenza tallied a pair of caused turnovers, while
Elise Palmer and
Jaylin Locke posted four ground balls apiece.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot Delaware, 29-28, and committed six fewer turnovers (16-22).
Both teams totaled 23 ground balls, while UD owned a 20-10 advantage in draw controls.
The Opposition
Riley Gillin led UD with five points (2g, 3a), while Danielle Livornese (4g) and Lizzie Yurchak (2g, 2a) added four points apiece.
Sam Schelling totaled a team-high seven draw controls, while Livornese and Yurchak added six and five respectively.
